Yup, the DBR12 is ok and designed that way. I have confirmation from my Yamaha dealer. It is working correctly, and the DBRs just have low sensitivity in the balanced inputs when used with an unbalanced source. The speaker sounds great and hugely loud when using a direct hookup (1/4" mono (TS)...

[see second post down for update and confirmation that it's just a difference in input sensitivity.]

Yup, I thought that was clear, but bears repeating. The input sensitivity on the DBRs is apparently lower than on some other speakers (like the JBL Eons and Mackie Thumps, in my experience), so you either need to use the Mic input for a direct connection, or use a mixer to boost the signal a bit....

  • I have a small Behringer Euro mixer, which I'll try next. Never had a problem with the Roland TD-8 or Yamaha DTX700 output levels when plugged directly into my JBL Eon15 G2. Sucks having to use a mixer (in a simple/casual home setup) when I'm not mixing anything, and just need a signal boost because...

I would be wary of the DBR15 if you're connecting it directly to the TD11's output. I just got a DBR12 (similar input sensitivity) to replace my JBL Eon15 G2. Hooking it up to my DTX700 (or to my hope-to-sell-soon TD-8) gives a max volume that is not that loud at all, with module and speaker volumes...

  • Well, the DI box connected to the DBR12 via xlr cable didn't work. Almost no sound at all from the balanced output, even with attenuation on the box minimized. Connecting the L/Mono DTX output to the rca input of the DBR12 also did not help. Sounds about as (non-)loud as just using a mono TS phono cable...

  • Thx, I have a small mixer but like to keep things simple with a direct drum-to-speaker hookup. Using input 1 switched to mic-level on the DBR12 works and sounds fine, but then I can't also use a mic at the same time (which we usually do for home jams). Apparently (after further research), the 1/4"...

Thx; gonna try something similar. I'm only using the L/Mono output. Apparently (after further research), the 1/4" phono jack in the "combo" DBR12 inputs (phono+xlr) are also balanced inputs; the L/R outputs on the DTX700 are unbalanced. Odd, because I never saw this mentioned anywhere...

Update: If I switch input 1 on the DBR12 to Mic (from Line) it is expectedly loud. But, I then can't use it for my xlr mic at the same time (because input 2 is only line level). Might it help if I got a 1/4" phono-to-xlr cable for the drum output, using it as a Line level input on the DBR12?

  • (Responding to an aged thread) Just got a DBR12, disappointed in its volume (compared to my JBL Eon15 G2). The DBR12 has more powerful amp and higher spl rating. But, even with drum module and speaker input both turned up to 100%, it's not nearly as loud/punchy as the Eon at 75% with the module also...

    Yamaha DBR12 speaker not loud

[UPDATE: See post #5 below for the confirmation--need to use mic input or a powered mixer to boost signal]

I bought a Yamaha DBR12 PA speaker for my vdrum kit, to replace my older/bulkier JBL Eon15 G2, and it arrived today. Looks nice, and pretty light. But, it is disappointingly MUCH less...

  • FS (US-NYC pickup) Roland TD8 kit with upgrades/extras $1800

Selling my Roland mesh-head vdrum kit, in excellent cosmetic and functional condition. Originally a V-Custom with a TD8 module, many upgrades and extras. Has a Gibraltar GRS-350C rack and all Gibraltar metal clamps (great for acoustic kits too!).

Update: Found a great deal on a Yamaha DTX760 kit, and really like it. (Slight upgrade to the discontinued DTX750, with bigger pads and the better KP100 kick; same rack, HH.) Even with bigger drum pads, it fits nicely in the same space as my old Roland TD8 kit with 8" mesh heads. Haven't explored...
