  • For that money I'd pick up a used TD-11 on eBay for £4-500.

I'd take a used Roland kit over a new Alesis for the same money - if you're not keen on buying from a randomer on eBay look for a used listing by a music shop and see if they will supply a warranty.

  • Drums are expensive.

    Electronic drums are more expensive.

    Welcome to our world

What I would say is I wouldn't trust Roland's opinion on low-volume kits. They have ulterior motives for advising you against going that route. But even a low-volume acoustic requires...

    VST Velocity Setup

What's the prevailing wisdom re. velocity calibration for VSTs hooked up to a module?

Is it just to calibrate the velocity curves for the module first and then tweak as required in the VST, leaving everything more or less linear until there's a good reason not to?

    Anyone have...

I just cancelled an order of a VH-11 new at a hugely reduced price (£199 instead of £299) to get a VH-10 at £259 instead based on the fact that it sounds like the VH-10 is more refined. If I had the VH-11 already... I might not bother.

I considered going the ATV route but they are a lot...

Nice - I just cancelled an order of a suspiciously cheap new VH-11 when I read that these were supposedly better - sounds like I made the right decision!

I think there must be two versions as some material definitely shows a rubber pad - either way, rubber or cloth will both have a better kick feel than undampened mesh imo.

Starting to think I might try a bix/real feel combo anyway....

Yeah that does look like a good bit of kit - I might consider going that way if I decided I definitely want to stick with the 18" kit (though I'd have to import as I'm UK-based). It's a quandary because I bought the 18" kit online and started converting it (panel mount jacks and intriggs)...

That's cool - one of the reasons I like the look of the KD-A22 is that it has that rubbery pad, which I think would play more natural than a bouncy mesh head. If the bix lets you loosen the head off a bit though without losing trigger quality that seems like it'd be a pretty good compromise......

How does the bix help with burying the beater out of interest? Is it just because you can loosen the head and not hamper the triggering?

I already have a real feel head for my Yamaha 22" kick so this could be a good no-drill option if it really works better than a trigger on the drum....

  • Is it really that loud? Hard to imagine this being the stand-out noisemaker over a set of drum-tec real feel heads...

Main reason is that I don't have the skill to DIY triggers quickly and I don't have the time to do them well... I've got Triggeras in the 18" kit at the minute that I want to replace (uneven triggering) and the solder job is... "interesting."

    The KD-A22 appeals because it's...

    Any rumour of a KD-A18?

I have a Mapex V kit that I bought to convert but since I saw the Roland KD-A22 I'm considering selling it and switching back to my old Yamaha Stage Custom and converting that instead. I don't want to drill the Yamaha though (already drilled the Mapex) so if there was a kick trigger like the KD-A22...
