    Ah, I see. Through experimentation with different Roland pads, 1KHz is more than adequate but I get your point now about using an offset into the ADC to get the full wave. In fact it makes so much sense that I think I might be going back to the drawing board!

    The second stage (together with the first) perform rectification of the input signal so that negative voltages are converted to positive.     That's funny - I've been researching exactly the same thing. There is just so much more performance in even a modest PC that it makes sense.

    I was thinking more of a mini-itx motherboard rather than a pre-packaged unit because I'm hoping to house it all in my own case. The cost is a bit...

    Yes, this is a DIY project and a learning experience. I'm happy to work with other people but in the end I'm just doing this for fun. I've already learnt loads about op amps and analogue electronics that I've never used before. That's the main reason why I'm doing this.

    Right. So here we go. I've made a few different trigger sensing circuits and fed them each into the ADC and written some software to interpret hits. I've experimented with a few different designs to see which works best but they all seem to perform in a similar way so I'm going to use the simplest....
    Three different piezo circuits. The simplest one is currently being tested at the bottom. This is the one I'm going to use. Sensor output when hitting rim. Sensor output with buzzing with one stick.

    Hi, yes I have. It looks fantastic but I want to be able to have a self-contained module that produces the sounds without requiring a computer.

    I guess I could make a megadrum unit and enclose it in the same case as the sound module but, as the firmware is closed source I would not be able...

    Not sure an Arduino is up to the job. Sticking to off-the-shelf boards, I'm looking at using an STM32F303 dev board for the triggers because they've got loads of ADCs and coupling it to something like a raspberry pi for the sound generation, USB MIDI, etc....

    I bought a used TD-3 a few years ago and since then I've been gradually updating all the components - swapping the rubber toms for PD105's, the snare is now a PD125, CY15 ride, VH11 hat, etc. However, the one thing I had not changed is the old TD-3 brain itself.
