  • It Might Not Be Independence Day, But "Hello boys, I'm back!"

It's been a while, so I hope all that know me here are doing well?

It looks like it has been around 14 months since I last was able to drop by and I see a lot has changed, but I am having fun catching up on the experiments on and developments with certain products.

It has been an incredibly busy 14 months for me, going back to October last year when I was asked to work on some of the Sonic Reality drum sample projects for a couple of name drummers. Those were quickly followed by some session work and a couple of band projects also started to come together, so my drumming career looked to be taking off again.

Ironically, just at the time, I was approached to be the Tour Manager on the first European tour for Simon Collins and his band, Sound Of Contact. http://www.soundofcontact.com
Simon is the eldest son of the legendary Phil Collins and is in his own right, a super talented drummer, musician and song writer.

Well, one thing led to another and we've since worked non stop and traveled to many countries around the world and along the way, they were voted best new band at the Classic Progressive Rock Awards in September.

.....As a result, I have not sat at my own kit since April, let alone even been home that often!

With the end of year and festive season racing up upon us, I will finally have some time to get some of my own music projects that I've had on the back burner into shape and that will also require a specific hybrid acoustic electronic kit.

I have a stunning new (well it was new at the start of the year!) Natal custom acoustic kit, but I will also need a few 'e' elements to make it all work.

I had just upgraded to the SPD-SX one day before I got the call, so that remains in the box, but again, that and the SPD-30 will play important roles.

Anyway, good to see some friends are still here although some have clearly drifted away

For those interested in following any of the Simon's, Sound Of Contact or even perhaps my own projects, I'll do updates here as and when I can.

For now I'll leave you with a photo of my studio from January, that said, almost everything has changed or is about to!

Good to see you back Graham! As usual...the site is a bit dysfunctional....but at least it....goes well with our little dysfunctional family we have here.

Welcome back to the madness, Cuban!

Your studio looks like a fun place to be! Not to often that I saw a 2box on stands - looking sweet!
      Happy Drumming!

Thanks guys. I've always like to mix it up a bit on the 'e' kit front. Use the best of what I need rather than bleed one brand only!

I'm looking foward to see what you will pick for your Hybrid-kit, will be exciting to see what it will end up look like!
I see lots of nice snares that you can choose from...!

The natural one looks as if its an older PEARL (with the black badge on it)....
Is it an old MLX, BLX, DLX, or GLX series snare? I'm guessing a 14x8, perhaps?

              Well spotted!
That Sir is a very special, totally unique, Pearl DLX Birch 14 x 8" parallel action snare.
Custom made for Phil Collins in 1982, you can see it in action on his Live At Perkins Palace video.

Apart from the European tour in May, I also helped set Simon's home up here in the UK (he has moved back from Canada).
We did a showcase in NYC in June and a big prog festival in Germany in July and since then, among other things, I have been working on setting up his label around the world and spent some time moving all his gear from Canada so he will have a full rehearsal / recording facility here. The band also recently shot a video for the next single, so always lots going on.

Well, that is simply Cee-double-Oh-L - Cool!

I will gladly take a look at said Phil Collins video!

So you have Mr. Collins custom-snare, you are a Tour Manager for his son, and I can see a 'Face Value' golden record and a Genesis-poster on the wall to the right of your studio!

Is this all coincidence? Or are you in some way affiliated to Phil Collins?

Very nice set up, great pic! I'm new here but this has been an interesting read none the less! How do you like the 2box?

I was very fortunate to work with Genesis & Phil back in the '80s as a teenage rookie roadie. Somehow, 27 years after I drooled over Phil's Pearl kit on the 1982 tour that I was on, it came my way, so I am blessed to own that along with a few other nice bits of memorabilia (flight cases, gold discs etc.) Now working with Simon, it is quite surreal having known him as a six year old. My middle name is Phil and my last name Collins, but no, we are not related.

Thanks for your kind words. I love the 2Box module. No disrespect to Roland, I used all their modules up to and including the TD20, but recording and live, just didn't do it for me. As well as needing the 'e' sounds, I needed the kit to sound acoustic, so I built a hybrid kit with the 2Box at it's heart. I used it for around 60 shows without a single issue and I haven't come across anything better since for ease if use and drum samples.

Awesome! I'm sure Simon and you have alot of memories to share!

I think I will go over to my friends and start to brag! ...That I'm in conversation with a Gentleman named 'Phil Collins' (politely withholding your first name...) that owns a custom Pearl DLX birch-kit!

Their faces will be like !

[...Then I shall take a picture of their gobsmacked faces and post it in the 'funny videos' thread!]
