Hi guys/gals,

I've been playing drums for about three years. I always had issues with the neighbors because of the noise. I was frustrated because of the fact that my playing time was limited. For months my acoustic kit just sat there looking all sad. Until this past Saturday.


I got a $25.00 gift card from Guitar Center so I went down there to pick up some sticks. When I got to the store there was no power, so I walked around in the darkness looking at some electronic kits and drooling at the Roland TD-20. The power came back after 45 min and I sat down and played the TD-20 for a good 30 min. To make the long story short, I walked out of there with one. I paid 4800.00, they even threw in a DW double pedal and a throne. I set it up together, jammed all night until midnight, had a blast. Sunday morning reality kicked in and made me realize that I just spent 5 grand on a kit. I love drumming and want to keep it bad but I've been thinking of returning it for a refund. At first my wife disagreed with me getting the kit but now she wants me to keep 'em. Should I?

I say, if the "Boss" says you can keep 'em, and it does not put you in a financial bind, then KEEP 'EM!!! You won't be sorry!! Especially, when you can play @ 3am if you want to!

Yikes. Tells me that Rolands markup is quite huge. The module sells for about $1500 with a kit or $1899 alone.

I added everything up separately (toms, cymbals, stand, module, etc.) and it adds up to around 4900.00. So yes, pricey but still under the average price on the market. They usually sell for 5800.00-5900.00 everywhere online.

That $4,800 price is fine. You got a proper deal. The added stuff makes it even sweeter. KEEP IT!

You definately got a break. My point was that the average person pays the tag or very near it. Roland has a big markup.

Dude, keep the drums by all means. Scratching the itch in the middle of the night and not bothering anyone is a great feeling.

A lot of my drum time is at night after the wife and kid are asleep.

Besides, if you didn't spend 5K on the drums... you would still spend it on something!

Keep The Kit!

At first my wife disagreed with me getting the kit but now she wants me to keep 'em. Should I?

Wizzard - If your wife likes them - keep them! And then figure out how you can get another one! I agree that if you are motivated, spending five g's on a kit will encourage you to earn a little more and really consider the advantages of creating a household budget plan that actually allows you to save on top of all that. Listen - I have fun to man - I think we all do here with percussion. I have two Pro V kits merged, and a Roland recording studio filling one room. There are a few zeros involved in the figure - right. But I got great deals on EVERYTHING. If I sold it I could get every dime back. The point is equity - and fun fun fun. I will never sell. They will have to rip it from my cold dark dead hands someday! I am looking for more equipment as well. It is to an extent like an addiction. However, there is quite a huge difference. It will not harm you! It will enable you to grow as a musician and as a person. It will help you understand what a dollar is worth. The neighbors will love you - it is quiet! Children will be amazed that a rock star lives on their block. And you will get ALL the exercise your heart needs to keep it ticking an extra 20-30 years man.

Do you Ski? Get some skis man and meet me on the slopes in VA or WVA this winter.

I completely agree. Playing late at night is a freaking blessing. I played till 2:00am this morning. Got up at 4:00 to go to work! Wife is jealous now, need to work on that.

Dude, are you like a motivational speaker? I'm holding on to the kit. What the hell. I've busted my ass off working, had the money available and have lots of fun playing late at night.

I don't ski but have always been interested on snowboarding. I used to surf back in the day. I'll think about it!
