  • Pics of sam(otacon28)'s custom built Blastech kit

Saw some of the other topics posted and wow some really nice kits on here guys . It always cool to see what different ways and gear that e-drummers use on their kits , so I figured I'd make a post with some pics of my current kit I've been playing to share with those who'd like to check them out .

I've made a few changes since these pics were shot , but I'll be shooting some updated pics soon of the new layout of my kit . A few things that have changed are as follows :

I added a ddrum4 drum module in place of the DTXpress III module , ddrum cast precision cymbal pads and hihat controller in place of where I had Roland Pd5 pads in these pics , I also just added 5 Hart Hammer triggers and some more ball & socket tom arms . I will be shooting some new updated pics right around Christmas and I'll add a few new pics .

I've always been a fan of mixing both electronics and acoustics together , so when I hooked up with Billy Blast in 2007 and got to play these drums It was just a really good fit for me . The shells on the drums themselves are Keller VSS Maple with a honduras mohogany wrap on them and are all internally triggered , so I don't have to worry about external trigger boxes to bolt on them . I love the overall feel of the shallow ( pancake style ) toms too .

Those are beautiful. Nothing beats a rich wood finish!
Id rather be told the ugly truth than handed a pretty lie.

      Thanks ,

This is probably my favorite e-kit setup I have used in quite a while . I'm looking forward to adding the 5 Hart Hammers to it when they arrive this coming week .

That is a very nice setup. I have always wondered how the blastech drums play. I assume that you like them! And the natural wood finish gives it that great juxtaposition of electronic and old world.

              Hey Sam ,
I am so glad the module is getting some use again (Nice rig BTW). I think the ddrum works much better when you use the ddrum Hat and cymbals .
I was just wondering what do you use the Yamaha module for ?. I also had one of those and used it for a practice kit at home . It worked great for me but I just decided to sell the kit to a friend and use drumkat for a reheasal kit ay home and just leave my live kit in the Equipment truck .

                Thanks Michael ,

This kit is really alot of fun to sit down to . I've been playing drums for 30 years now and have played both electronic and acoustic kits through the years . I get pretty inspired when I play this kit and it has actually opened me up to playing different styles of music with the mixture of drums and triggers to work with on one setup . I was a little sceptical about the shallow toms and kick depth when I first looked into these drums , but I was surprised at how well they play . I like the fact too that being they're real Keller maple drum shells I can throw mylar heads on them and use it as a little acoustic coffee shop style kit for smaller gigs if I wanted to . I haven't played the Blastech's that are full depth size ( quite possibly will at this years NAMM though ) but the one thing I notice is that the airflow that you feel when playing an acoustic kit is present in these and the feeling is very natural .

I checked out your kits on your website by the way and very nicely done on the configurations . I'm going to add some pics in a photo album on here of different layouts and electronic drumsets I have used through the years . I think it's always really cool to see the different types of electronic drums and layouts that people use within their set-ups .

Yeah I'm super psyched to have a ddrum module again . Major props to you for hooking me up with the deal on it brotha ' . The ddrum hihat and cymbals do work very well with it although the Roland pads did work better than I expected they would being they were older pads .

The Yamaha DTX module is pretty much for the most part added for stacking and layering voices around the kit ( etc. pianos , bass , synth , etc. ) . I've been assigning & layering various piano and other samples on the pads around my kit and working them into grooves in real time for the past month or so . Kind of like playing a " real time " loop sequence while playing a beat as well at the same time . I like the ability to stack notes of say for example a piano and being to use 1 pad to play 5 different notes of a piano . I also like that you can arrange the order of what key is played throughout the sequence .

I'm still toying with some ideas that I have been playing around with this , but I'm gonna shoot some vid's once my Hart Hammers arrive ( gotta love ebay ! ) .

Nice kit man! It's "different", but I like it. It looks great. Is the lowest PD-7 easy reachable? It sééms to be hidden a bit behind that tom...

                      Thanks ,

I'm 6'6" tall , so I've got long arms . Where I set it up just seemed to fit well there for me ( LOL ) . The roland pads are actually PD5 pads and I generally used that particular one as a switch pad with my Dtx module for starting and stopping loops & sequences . The higher one on the left side over the hihat pad I assigned a 2nd. kick drum sound to , so the Roland pads were pretty much laid out around the kit more for being used as accessory pads and voices .

Hope everybody had an awesome New Year celebration lastnight .

I'll be putting some updated pics & a few videos up this weekend of the new layout of my kit . I added some new stuff that isn't in these pics as I mentioned before , but just recently I also had an unexpected Christmas present arrive so I have an additional matching floor tom on my kit now too !

I allready had an input on the ddrum4 module ready for adding a 2nd. floor tom to my kit , so it's kind of wild that this one arrived , being that I was going to order one this year .

                              Here's the new pics !

I shot some newer pics , but my digital camera's battery was pretty dead so I'll be putting up some better ones in my photo album soon after the battery re-charges . Thought the new configuration turned out really kick ass , and I love the Hart Hammers that I just recently added

Overview pic with the 5 Hart Hammers shown

                              Overview of Playside shot

Close up shot of Hart Hammers rack mounted

Dual sound modules and sampling pads

I have a new PC on the way in January , so the videos will be up soon .

My Dell finally went Kaboom !!
