  • My first video

Good morning guys. A little back ground, I've been playing drums since March 2015 when I got my first ekit. At Christmas I got a TD25K and have made a few additions. I've now had 4 lessons and wanted to record myself so I could see and hear what my playing is actually like. My colleagues at work had also asked me to show them what I do so when it was my good friends birthday I took the opportunity to make her a cover video. I thought I'd post it up here so people can hopefully offer me some help and constructive critisism on anything you see from technique to how I hold the sticks or how my kit is positioned. But remember this is my first video and I'm largely self taught so go easy on me and its also the first time using the video editing software!

Like the kit! Only negative I would say is it seems like you're rushing the beat a little. A slower beat would probably fit better with that song.

Thanks for the comment. I was thinking people would say I was a little slow behind the beat.

Well I for one, have nothing to criticize about the performance. One has to consider the very dry nature of the Roland module sounds being very revealing of timing accuracy. Next is the fact you are playing along to pre-recorded drums. Its drumming on hard mode really, where no mistakes go unnoticed. But you'll improve from this, where as others stay deaf to it on acoustic drums.

Best advice I can give you; loosen your wrists on the hi-hat. Start to float a bit more rather than pound. Eventually you'll evolve that beat into more of a swing, rather than straight rock. After that, you can work on hi-hat pedal expression and amaze everyone.

Many thanks for you advice. Its a drumless track I'm playing with so what you hear is me. I really got a lot from watching myself and I can see what you mean about the stiff wrists and lack of hi-hat expression. This is something my drum tutor picked up on and we are working on.

How did you record the video and sound?

I recorded the video on a Olympus Tough TG4 camera mounted on a Tripod. The sound was recorded on the TD25 module direct to USB. I then used some free editing software to mix the audio and video together muting the audio from the camera. The difficult job was lining up the two recordings so the picture was in time with the sound. That was why you will hear me hit the snare 4 times at the start. This gave me 4 big sound waves I could align to sync the video and audio. You might find this useful:-

This helped me get my video sorted.

                  Nice video!

I noticed that when you hit the snare, you're not letting the stick rebound, keeping it pressed against the head instead, which results in audible double hits. Maybe it's intentional, but it's just something I noticed - on an acoustic snare you'd get a kind of dry, muted sound without a tail if you did that; otherwise, keep at it!

Thanks for your comment. Your right I noticed that too with the snare which wasn't something I was trying to do. I think that shows what a powerful tool recording (audio and or video) is in showing up areas to work on!
