  • Guess I'm committed now...

So a few weeks back, my wife asks the pastor of the church where my son goes to daycare "hey, are you looking for a drummer?" Turns out, the pastor has been praying for a drummer (litterally) and then the wife drops into his office. He acutally told me he thought I was the answer to his prayers! Honestly I wasn't even looking for a gig.

Fast forward a couple weeks and I've "jammed" with the pastor a few times. I've basically been playing along with the songs they are going to do the next service. They don't have drum music so it's all feel and improv. Last night we jammed through this sunday's lineup and then he drops it on me... "so are you gonna play sunday morning?"

Wow. I guess I am. I haven't played in front of people since I was the drummer in highschool back in '95.

So, I guess I've got a gig this sunday. Wish me luck. Or I guess in this case... a prayer!

I played the drum set in our pep band and concerts in highschool. I haven't played in public since 1995. Never at a church.

Plus, I'll be playing an A kit this time around. So I've got to really focus on my dynamics and try not to blow away any old lady eardrums.

I'll let you know if I pull it off

The pastor mentioned they really wanted to use an e-kit... wonder where they might find one?

          Hi labenske.

          I don't think it's a coincidence.....Everything happens for God's purpose and I'm sure you will do fine.

I'm also kinda in the same boat as you....only difference is that I've only been playing for a couple of years (but practising quite regularly).

Our chuch has indeed a shortage of drummers (as not everyone is interested or can play drums)....I was asked by a friend in church if I would like to join the worship team.

Being a relative beginner and not having performed in front of a live audience, I get so scared and nervous about having to play in front of a crowd.

I believed that God has given me a special talent as far as being able to keep up a beat and tempo, and even though I'm scared to death, I feel that it's my calling to serve God this way.

Just enjoy the worship and praise Him while you serve Him.

          Good luck.

              Hi SP.

A bit off-topic but one of my favorite band is coming out of Australia - they are called "Hillsongs". Are you familiar with them? If so, have you heard any of their music?

I can't say I have. Are they anything to do with Hillsong Church?

Hmm. Praying for a drummer. For some reason it just sound a bit ironic.

                  Labenske,

The nice thing about playing at church is that it is hands-down the friendliest audience you will ever play for. I have yet to have anyone holler "You Suck!" from the audience. Well, OK, once when the pastor had too much to drink (JOKE!).

Go with the spirit and all will be beautiful!

Their drummer is quite good also.

I recently played "Mighty to Save" (above) with my Mens Minsistry Band for our Churches Womens Retreat and the worship was great. I felt very fortunate to have played these songs for the ladies.

                      Hi SP.

The band is called Hillsong United and I'm sure you will love their music/lyrics.

As Mesh_Head mentioned for 1 of the songs, try to search the song "Mighty to Save"...very awesome song and the drummer is amazing. I wished I could play as well.

I'm going to be the most hated guy now... but can we sway back towards the drumming and away from the "spiritual stuff".

-Honest..doesn't bother me!! -tends to lead to ..how to put this delicately.. "misbegotten" threads.. lol. (and while there hasn't been a good flame war in a while...I just as soon not see anyone invoke the wrath of "Upper Management'..ya know? )

I thought this post was about both. Mentioning God in society may soon become illegal but that won't prevent those of us who are awake retaining our faith
