  • Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL

I did a search and could not find anything on this but please direct me to a link if it's already been discussed. I use 1818VSL and tried to connect it to my new computer today. All channels have light distortion on them but it does not do this with my old comp. So I know all the cables and the unit is good. I installed the latest driver too and tried a long series of insult and swear words but none have that helped!

Has anyone had a similar issue with a USB interface?

Here are the spec of my computer running Windows 8 and I'm using a TD30 for my module. Thanks for any help you can offer!

When 'VSL' comes up, my alarm-bell is set off...
A few unfortunate experiences on this forum with them. I think Perceval will (and should) chime in, hopefully. He can tell you some...!

Thanks, I sent him a private message because I saw him posting on the presonus site.

        Yep, that's me.
I also perfected my strings of swear words while using that unit.

coming up to 2 years without a drivers fix from Presonus.
They acknowledge the problem, but refuse to say if they are working on a fix or not. No feedback from the company at all.

Trouble seems to come from the i-series Intel chips. Although some AMD report distorsion as well... the dreaded "clicks-and-pops".

Only couple of things to try:

        - Never plug it into USB3. It does not work under the USB3 protocol. Use USB2.

        - On the Presonus FAQ page, there is a link to a page that shows you how to streamline your computer for Audio duty. Best to follow much if not all of the tweaks.

Older computer do not seem so affected, so, if it is possible, you have to use a computer that is over 5 years old for the best chance of getting the 1818vsl to work.

Unless a miracle happens, this unit will never achieve all the hype it was given.
I suspect that the 1818vsl will be quietly put in the legacy section (which means no more support... not that there was any before!) and be dropped from the line up anytime now.

It really is quite shocking and Presonus aren't the only ones. Incompatibility with Intel, that's amazing.

What award was that? The 'official NAMM non-support' award...?

Man, I hope this don't affects the StudioLive mixers series....

Non support award, love it!! It was a huge article I read in Music and Sound Retailer about Presonus' own trade show of sorts, and then how NAMM gushed all over them with an award of some kind. They had a huge booth at NAMM and I'm actually considering buying one of the 4v4 boxes. Maybe not now....we'll see.

              Well, it's not officially dropped.

But when there is a problem for so many, and there hasn't been a new driver in 1 1/2 years, plus no news from the company saying they are working on it or not... Many have asked. Most of the time, the answer has been ... static! Once a while, someone at customer service steps up to say that they don't want to tell us...

I'd say it's pretty much unsupported.

What's really crazy is their boards are widely used by production companies in the US. You'd think they'd figure this out!

I heard from a tech and have yet to send him my report as I'm slammed with work. But I'll keep ya posted...

...which makes it all the worse, IMO....

They still advertise a 'pretty much unsupported' paperweight as 'The flagship in PreSonus’ new generation...'

Or how 'bout: '...you can do it simply and easily, (...) thanks to the tight integration between PreSonus hardware and software.'

Here's one more: 'Fortunately, our engineering wizards have dramatically reduced processing delay in the AudioBox VSL series. '

I wonder, whether that last statement is actually giving the good people at RME Audio 'engineering gods' status...?

                  Ha! Brilliant!

If it was me and I had already shelled out the money, I'd make them tell me...
Customers invested in the product in good faith, and it's their freakin' right to know about any improvements!

At least that would be *my* humble understandings of 'Fairness'...

Erm... maybe the 'crowd' simply hasn't screamed loud enough?
This may sound awfully political now but maybe the Presonus-forum needs some kind of 'Petition'..?

If you take a stroll onto the Presonus forum, under the 1818vsl, you'll find plenty of very enraged people who get nothing but static, from both their interface and Presonus. Their stories end as well as it can when they finally say that they gave up and bought a Focusrite, M-Audio, RME, ... which worked as advertised right out of the box.

I have the 44VSL running on my Windows 7 box. It was an absolute nightmare to get it to work. I had the same problem on my Windows 7 laptop.

All that being said...once I *did* get it to work, it has been mostly flawless since then, and I am loathe to try to upgrade it or anything else. It works, so I leave it alone.

As I recall, it required tons of un-install / re-install iterations, and, if I'm not mistaken, I had to install it using one USB port, and then unplug it and use a different USB port to make it work. I'm not sure what voodoo made it work in the long run, unfortunately. In the end, I made up my mind to never purchase another presonus product, ever. (I could have changed my mind if they ended up fixing the problem, but they haven't yet, so my decision is probably permanent at this point.)

                        There you go!
                        Typical Presonus awesomeness right there!
BTW, it was not working when it first came out either... so you just got customer service garbage thrown at you.

Showing us again that they just come out with products but don't care to support them.

The conclusion on the forums there is that Presonus do not handle any of the software related with products, they outsource it.... which would be fine if the outsourcing company would continue working on updating drivers, but either from Presonus not willing to pay extra to fix their drivers, or the outsourcing company not willing to provide support, we are left with door stopper bricks that are very expensive.

I can't even try to sell it on the second hand market here as is...

Go ahead and feel free to vent frustration on their forum. I know I did. Didn't help my brick, but I felt (just a little) better.

                          Well, it's official....

New driver from Presonus... after waiting for years?

                          Not going to happen.

I think they were waiting for an excuse to not update the VSL part, and they just found one...

Got an email today and inside is this pearl:

                          AudioBox 22VSL, 44VSL, 1818VSL:
Starting with OS X 10.11, Apple has restricted kernel level mixing access for third party vendors. This means that VSL software will no longer function on Mac operating systems beyond version 10.10. On OS X version 10.11 or higher, AudioBox VSL devices will only operate as class-complaint audio interfaces. Please refer to this article here that explains the issue in more detail and how to resolve it.
If you currently do not use VSL software, your AudioBox VSL interface will continue to function as you expect.

Notice that, unlike the other products where they say they are ...ahem... "working" on resolving the issue with 10.11, there is no mention of resolving anything on the VSL.

There are washing their hands clean saying it's not their problem anymore.

I've been telling people that the VSL line from Presonus was dead pretty much from the start... now, years later, they just confirmed it.

If they had sold the VSL line as good interfaces, without all the marketing hype that was never made to work properly, it would've been great. Price it accordingly.

But the attitude from Presonus, continuing to claim that it was all fine, inexistant customer service for that product, and the promise of a new driver was coming soon.... that never happened...

That killed Presonus for me... Never again.
