  • laptop recording goldwave

    Hi all,

Have got some great help already (ranman) on how to simply connect a pc up and have followed the "who wants to site in" threat. I have downloaded goldwave which i have now installed.

This Sony laptop for some reason does not have an aux/line input, just a mic. Is there another way to get sterio recording or am i stuck with the mic input. It is my understanding that the mic does not give good results! USB for instance?

I have no experience (yet) of midi and am awaing delivery of the USB/Midiman uno connector to use with TD-M8 suggested elsewhere.

From reading various posts midi will only record "events" and not the audio and seems a little too complicated for a nebie - one step at a time!!!

    Ta

I have used the mic input with decent results but I have also heard that a line in input performs better. As far as MIDI goes, you have a multitude of options available for editing and you can also change the sounds triggered after the fact. I currently use Cakewalk 9.0 as a audio recorder and have not yet explored the MIDI possiblities. Later.../JF/

      Hey Jackeen;

Does your laptop have expansion slots? If so, you could upgrade the sound card. If you are forced to go into the mic input, you might find that lower volume levels will help avoid distortion. I am wondering if the mic input is stereo. Which Sony laptop do you have? Maybe someone here has a similar one and can be of more help.

        slots and sony

        Hi,

It'a SONY PCG- GR2115MP. 1 gig, 256 ram, 2 pcmia (or whatever their name are) slots (one used for WIFI) and 16 3d video card,

Not sure if the mics sterio, have tried recording through it today and get agrip with goldwave.

pretty crap after the first hour - the input totally overpowering the software with loads of distortion. tgried both mono and sterio.

ah well off to the pub to have a guinness

maybe there is a card ???

I use the mic input then I arm the track or tracks if using seperate l & r inputs in Cakewalk. Once the track is armed (ready to record) I open the console which allows me to adjust the input levels. A little tweaking of my output on the TD10 and adjustment to the input level produces decent results. Once I am ready to record I just hit the record button in Cakewalk and off I go. .../JF/

              Mic Recording

Another recording option is using your USB capabilities (which I assume are present on the Sony laptop).

There are a wide variety of usb audio inputs from the Griffin iMic for US$35 on up to hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

I'm not expert, but there is a good thread in the Macintouch web site where this has been discussed. The site is a Mac focused site, however, the information in the discussion is pretty much universal. Worth a read anyway. Here's the link. USB Audio

                  Jackeen,

I was recently shopping for audio hardware and one thing that intrigued me was the options available for the Echo Layla24 (I subsequently bought it, but haven't received it yet).

It's made up of a sound card and a break-out box with multiple inputs and outputs. The thing that caught my attention was that it is available in both PCI (desktop) and PCMIA (Laptop) versions. The desktop version costs me $599, but there is an option to get just the PCMIA part very inexpensively (just over $100). They can share the same break-out box.

Anyway, you might just be interested in the PCMIA version from the get go. I didn't read the other thread, so I don't know all the details of what you are after. You can find out about the Layla at www.echoaudio.com

                    an update & Q,

                    Thanks

Joe - after looking at the link i needed the break out box as well which was too much dosh until I know what i'm doing (if that ever hapens).

Epicurean - couldn't get the imic locally so opted for the edirol unit - which appears to work fine on the SONY although tried it on my other laptop an got quite a bit of backgeound noise fro the hard disk and even the glide pad. I taught that having the audio interface outside the laptop would stop this kind of noise but - there you go !!!!

jayafisher - have now got Cakewalk HS 2002 and will try it after I get used to Goldwave. - one step ...... as they say.

Ranman - Goldwave works Brill !! - getting used to it bit by bit. A question - once you load a track into it can you use effects on the go? At the moment I load the track , use say the equilaser, it then recalulates the whole track and then I play it again at which point I'vw forgoten what it sounded like before. i.e use an effect as it is playing ????

Once again thanks for all the help - i'ts a God send -I live you all (Not Literally)

                    Jackeen
