  • How I make my YouTube Videos

First off, I hope this is the right forum for this post. It seems to me that it is the best place.

I have a few videos on YouTube where I drum along music and I constantly get the same question, so I thought, it might be a good idea to tell everyone once and for all. People really seem to want to know how I do my videos and I am not using overly expensive gear.

There are three parts to the video and they are all here:

I hope this helps you, if you are one of those that are trying to get started with drumming videos.
Ask not whether something is useful -- ask what it is useful for.

Roland TD-12, Iron Cobra hihat stand and bass-drum pedal from TAMA. My accoustic kit is a Yamaha Power-V Birch with Paiste Alpha-series splashes, crashes, and hihat. My ride is a Zildjan Ping Ride, 20" I think.

Check out my TD-12 on Youtube. My page is here http://www.youtube.com/HerlPearl.

Remember, this is just the way I do it ... there may be alternatives. For example, you may use different software for example Audacity (open source) instead of Cubase.

But the general idea would be the same.

Already watched the videos a while ago and once again, great job.
I will have to put out a similar video while going the "How to export to youtube" video I am planning, (after my desktop comes out of repair...)

The whole rig setup isn't all that hard:
          - Audio goes into interface and records all audio
          - Video camera is setup and records all video.
          - Fix audio in a sequencer of choice (Audacity, Cubase, Sonar...) and export as .wav
          - Import audio into a video editor program of choice (WMM crashes a lot but is free, Sony vegas is quite low in price but works great).
          - Capture video from camera using firewire cable (common for MiniDV cameras).
          - Sync off a cymbal hit or something
          - Export and upload to youtube or any online site. Youtube is popular but Vimeo compresses much less and gives much better quality.

My kit is custom running 10, 12, 14" toms, a 12" snare, 2 crash, 1 ride, 1 splash, and dual kick drum all plugged into a
Roland TD-6V module which runs MIDI to Superior Drummer 2

Thank you very much and I will be looking forward to your video. The list you are bringing here pretty much wraps up the whole process. For most people, the hardest part may be to actually choose an interface/sound card of some kind so they can get the sound into the computer.

I use the Alesis box because some guy recommended it ... it has given me a few problems with Vista but works fine under linux. It may not be the best thing in the world but it was cheap and I needed something here and now, so I got that one.

while i was watching your videos about how u made them i decided to watch again your playing along videos and especially the latest kravitz one.
I noticed that when u play u seem to be a part of your drum kit.You seem extremely concentrated but the same time u got this free style feeling like u are about to improvise. It's like there is a magnetism between your thoughts and the kit.Like one is sending signals to each other.

I could call it like u got a perfect drumming breeze or something like that,
hope u got the meaning of what i want to say

Thank you ... I am always just about to improvise. I constantly need to remind myself to just sit tight and hold the beat, but I always end up doing an extra beat somewhere or a open hat or something.

It is not something I have thought much about, but I suspect it must stem from my background as a drummer. Quite early in my drumming life, I got into a schoolband that played a lot of jazz music. Later on, I ended up in a band that played funk/rock in the beginning but gradually transformed into an experimental jazz/fusion band.

Then some years passed and I took up heavy metal, blues, african rhytms and a little bit of funk as well. During that period, I played in many different bands and also explored other instruments, music theory, and things.

Somewhere in the middle, I ended up in a band that was supposed to play rock music but ended up mixing all sorts of things, so once again; I was messing with many things.

Currently, I am in a band that mainly plays 70s rock music such as Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Eric Clapton, and all those things. I think I am the type of drummer that needs a lot of room in my band to express myself. Like one guy said to me once; "I have never had a drummer that DOES so much before."

I suppose it is good for some musical styles, but I would probably be hopeless as a session-drummer.

M-Audio still seems to be the best choice for interfaces on a Vista machine. Any other drivers I have tried have given me problems...

The hardware is probably the hardest part to pick for those who know little about the field of recording. Today you can get interfaces with firewire, USB1.1, USB2.0, and even PCI.
The outboard type also have a great number of other features to choose from such as number of inputs, phantom power, preamp types, and input types.

I may also do a short youtube video going over what to look for when choosing an audio interface. I did go over it a little in UG video 2 however I can go into more detail with a full 10 minute video.

I think that such quite a number of people would benefit from such a video. Although I am not completely unfamiliar with recording, I must say, that I don't know too much about the available hardware, so I'd appreciate such a video.

you guys have too much work in you videos...

Very simple answer for i have been doing this for a year with you tube.

                      this is what you need:

Pinnacle MovieBox http://www.pinnaclesys.com, or best buy has it
HOSA dual 1/4" male to rca: get on ebay for $5
Video camera: Need to have output cable with rca jacks, should be standard.
                      Computer with vista/XP

                      Directions:

The pinnacle moviebox comes with the editing software and capture device needed. The capture device is a port that has inputs for rca, hd, and s-video. Then it has the usb out put to connect to the computer.

After you install the software and get it all set up the user interface is very simple to use. THERE IS NO SYNCING OF VIDEO AND AUDIO NECESSARY.

The HOSA connects from your master out of the your TD module to the capture device the has the red/white/yellow rca inputs. You just connect the red/white.
Then the cable from your camera that has the rca outputs you just connect the yellow one to the capture device which is just for video.

So you have the audio coming from your td module (white/red) and then your video streaming in through the yellow.

Turn camera on. You might need to set it to "photo" and make sure it is plugged into the wall because some cameras have an auto shut off if nothing is being recorded. I have a sony cam that I have to set to "photo" because it will turn off in 3 minutes on the "record video" function

open up your pinnacle software select "capture". Their is a little video screen in the software that shows what your are filming in real time and then you will see the "record time" counting up and bam you are recording!

when you are finished recording you select stop on the screen and from their you can edit it in "Microsoft Movie Maker" as Herl has shown.

I just clip out parts easily and compress for youtube.

Herl, I just uploaded a vid I did. I posted it on Vimeo. They allow you 1 HD vid a week and 500 mb total. I like the HD feature.

I wanted to say thanks for the sync tutorial as I want to Master the sound and then marry it to the vid I like your way.

I do alot of video projects for my job and have a few thoughts on Cameras and editing software. I have 2 hd cameras that I use and soon to be 3. They are important in only one aspect since the compression scheme is different you need to have some understanding if you want to have an easy time with it. I started messing around with a DXG 569 camera it does 720p HD in a .MOV quicktime format. It is the easiest format to use and view when your done. Working with it in a editing situation can be a pain though since only Adober premier elements 7 or Cyberlink Powerdirector are the only 2 consumer editing choices. This also goes if you are thinking of getting a DXG 595 for 1080p HD vids.

My Canon HF100 takes awesome video but again the compression format is rough to work with. I use Cyberlink Powerdirector and Pinnacle Studio 12 and it is a bit hard to work with.

neither of my formats allow me to work in Windows Movie Maker (Free) and I cant find a good Non linear editing solution for Linux yet (about a year away)

Anyway thanks for the tutorial and look forward to seeing more vids and check out Vimeo very cool site. Thanks, Tom
