  • new to v-drum recording

I'm a guitarist who also plays bass/drums/keys and I just got my first v-drumkit, a TD-9k. Sounds great and is funner than hell to play.

Now i'm looking into a good way to record drum tracks with the td-9. My knowledge of MIDI is very low, I get the basics but haven't ever put it into practice. So I wanna know if this would work well, this is the setup i'm looking into:

Midi cable going out of my td9 brain into an E-mu 0404(1st cable)
Midi cable going out of an E-mu 0404 into my td9 brain(2nd cable)
I plan on using Reaper on my PC(P4 3ghz 4mb ram)

Would this work well or am I missing something? Would Reaper pick up the exact sounds that the td9 would be playing in my headphones and would there be any latency issues? I still don't really understand what a midi mapper is, would I need something like that?

Also, a stickied thread full of newbie info from the vet's here would be a good thing

    thanks

you have the right connection path going and yes, that will work..there is no latency with midi and it will record exactly like you hear it in the headphones because when you play your midi recording back, it will use your interface's midi out cable to play back your track from the td-9 module wich you no doubt have hooked up to said interface(404) with 2 cables from your main outs on the td-9 to 2 analog in's on the interface..midi has no sound of it's own without the drum module so,if you want to retain that sound on reaper without having to turn the td-9 on every time you want to play your track, you will have to convert your midi tracks to audio tracks within reaper so that the sound from your td-9 module gets permanently recorded as a wave file in reaper...hope this helps.....

I thought Midi didn't transfer actual sounds just trigger data, so how can the sounds get from the td9 to my pc through Midi cables?

You're quite right Cyborgasm, but I think you've misunderstood what i-drum said

you will have to convert your midi tracks to audio tracks within reaper so that the sound from your td-9 module gets permanently recorded as a wave file in reaper...
To elaborate on this a little more, what you need to do is connect the audio output of the TD-9 to your audio interface, then set those audio inputs to record. When reaper plays back the MIDI performance on the TD-9, reaper will capture the actual audio. This is what i-drum means by converting from MIDI to audio

Hope this helps, and i-drum, I hope I haven't stepped on your toes here. Love the studio pics by the way!

I think I get the basics now, but actually setting Reaper up to do that might be another story

          thanks guys.

Joel.[/QUOTE]thanks and no, not at all..it's good to have different explanations of tech by more than one person..sometimes you say something a different way and it clics in your mind all of a sudden..

I've been doing exactly the same thing Cyborg. I've got Reaper to record and play back but it's doing something weird with the timing. I'm new to this also so I'll be curious to see how you get past some of the obstacles.
