  • Management Buy-Out at Roland!

Just discovered this on synthzone.com: Roland is bought by its own management:

What is your view on this? Dramatic developments, frankly - first, the end of Roland Europe, and now this...

Let's see if Drew knows anything. Maybe now they'll come out with a module like a 2Box!

"Roland" means a lot of products...may not even include any changes in the V Drum line up. They have better selling product lines out there....including Boss

From what I've read so far, I don't expect much change in the product line itself. I think this is more about long term growth.

Alan's statement about long term growth is spot on. (BTW, the finance.yahoo.com link that hairmetal-81 posted is essentially the same Press Release that was run on Business Wire on May 14th):

Thanks for your comments on this Drew. I've been playing Roland stuff since the TD-7 first came out, bought the demo model used at Ace music in Orlando when they first came out.

I hope you guys keep on your game, don;t let that stinky 2box show you up!

I believe by the statement " the end of Roland Europe" you're referring to the closing of the Roland factory in Italy that was announced last November? The Italian factory was known as the Roland Europe factory, where the V-Accordion, Arranger Keyboard and European Piano products were produced. The production at this factory continued until March 2014, when production was transferred to other facilities within Roland Corporation.

It is of course always sad news when jobs are lost (in this case by the employees at the Italian factory), however R&D, production, and support of the products will continue.

Just some clarification for what it's worth.

Ugg.... You realize that by making an open source module, Roland would effectively be destroying the V-Drum line of products, right?

Right now Roland is the "Nintendo" of the e-drum world. 2-Box is the Atari of the e-drum world. 30 years after its inception, where is Nintendo, and where is Atari? That's what open source vs. proprietary does for a company. Sadly, I own both.
I think my work is done here.

Management buyouts are not desirable for a couple of reasons: One of most obvious issues is management is now the owners/shareholders/stakeholders. The company was sold without any apparent competitive bids: Was it purchased for an excessive price. If the sale/purchase was made because management could not agree with the board on the proper direction of the company, is management going to seat a new board? Will they seat like minded people that they agree with or industry leaders. How was the buyout financed? if it was private equity, what is their exit strategy and how long do they plan to be in the company? Will management take the new company public or stay private? Remember, management's primary responsibility is to increase stockholder wealth.

Its true if you think about it. Honestly, why would any 2box user ever need to upgrade their module? You can convert and upload any VST out there and it plays perfectly on the current one. You have all the speed anyone could ever need, interchangable SD cards for endless expandability, and third party manufacturers making more and more sounds every year. There is no need to ever buy a new 2box module... unless the current one breaks.

... Unless you want the ability to record in the module, onboard FX, individual channel sliders, etc.
