Windows 8.1 free update ...... Wait!

    Windows 8.1 free update ...... Wait!

    I got the pop up when I started my Win 8 64Bit PC the other morning, takes you directly to the free 8.1 update from the Windows store.... I figured, what the heck, I have a little free time to install. Well, all I can say is I wish I had waited. My PC was running great before the update. Now I am experiencing waaaaay longer startup times.... This morning it went into some sort of Boot loop. It would boot very slowly proceeding to the Windows Start screen, after logging in it would start all over. I finally got to the desktop after a restart and another boot loop. This is a bug and others are posting about it .... So anyway wait til they get this bug worked out before updating is my advice. So I guess VB isn't the only one releasing software that is not ready for prime time!

    On the upside, I had previously given up on using one of my built in DVD RW drives and had previous problems with my built in All in One card reader, after the update all my hardware is once again recognized and working. J

      Mine did that once or twice. It'll go away after a few boots. I don't think it's the actual 8.1. I think it's other updates that follow. All I can tell you is just let it sit. It'll get through it sooner or later.

          How strange - I updated to 8.1 a couple of weeks ago and have had no issues - nothing but praise - its waay better than 8.

          Option to boot straight to desktop is a welcome addition (right click taskbar on desktop -> properties -> Navigation -> Start screen and check "when I sign in or close all applications on a screen, go to the desktop instead of start")

          Showing a start button is way better to - sick of hot corners.

              Thanks for the advice, Jerry!

              Unfortunately, us users being 'treated' as beta-testers (without being paid, of course!) by software-companies seems to be the norm more and more!
              It's a pity!

                  I'm glad some are having good results with 8.1 but I can say that it has been a bad experience so far for me. I clicked on the update, installed it.... and now my nice dependable startup has become a slow, hanging pain in the .....

                      It is getting better, no more boot loops for a day now. And startup is not hanging, still slower startup than before the update though.

                          I wish I had waited as well. Especially since I use Start8 and it does everything and more that 8.1 provides with the return of the start button. Since the upgrade I experienced several random restarts. I have tons of errors in event viewer related to USB filters. I don't seem to be having usb issues but it still bugs me. Guess it's time for a fresh install.

                              Yeah, I installed Poki on Win 8 a day after I first got it. Like Start8 it does everything I needed without 8.1 Another thing that happened was Windows was showing that everything was On with my Antivirus and Firewall program ..... but the AV Firewall program was reporting unprotected .... I uninstalled and reinstalled and that is working fine now.
                              I think 8.1 will be a good update ...... I just think late comers might be better off .... dunno.

                                  After running 8.1 for over a week now startup is much better. I still think it takes a little longer to load, but nothing like the first day or two.
