  • playing with CD's

    Hi all,

Am awaiting delivery of the TD8 kit, in the meantime I am trying to get organised (in my case na imposible) and have spent many a hour ploughing through this site gathering much needed info.

anyway - on a thread about playing along to drummerless cd's and mp3 my question is how ??

Is the cd hooked up to on of the imputs on the TD8 to allow for playback throught the head phones or monitor. I plan to hook up the TD8 to my laptop through a midi /usb connector (advised on another thread). Could cd/mp3 be played via the laptop an the info sent to the TD8 that way??

    Any advise much appreciated

    Ta

Hay Jackeen; Welcome to the comunity, and congrats on your new kit!

When it arrives you'll see a 'mix in' jack on the back of the module. This will accept a stereo line-level signal from any device (eg: cd player, laptop, cassette deck, etc.) that has a 'line out' output. The kit doesn't come with a cable for this, but Radio Shack is well stocked.

The problem with having your laptop play the cd into your module is that it could distract the laptop at critical moments when you are trying to record your kit (ref: the midi connection you mentioned). So I would suggest dropping by Walmart and spending a few bucks (maybe less than $20?) on a little cd player.

I hope this helps. Happy new year!

      inputs ......

      Many many thanks,

I have a seperate DVD/CD player which sounds the right way to go.

From reading various post the TD8 records via its internal sequencer !! I surpose its too much to ask if it records the external input as well as the drums or can the "combined master piece" be saved via the midi connection?

PS - it would cost be a 1,000 bucks for the flight to the good old US of A to pick up the $20 cd player from Walmart - Now that would be a good story to tell the grand children in later life !!!! - Oh I remember ......

        Hmmmm...good point about the Walmart.

The TD8 will record sequences internally, but not complete compositions. Alas, there's just not enough memory. And, no, it won't record the 'mix in' signal. What it is 'recording', really, is events, not audio.

The way I record audio (here's a sample) is to run a stereo cable from the TD8's main outs to the line-in on my laptop's sound card. I then use GoldWave to record the audio. There are better ways, but this one works well for my needs.
