I think you'll find that folks here play every type of music with their V's, with the possible exception of straight jazz, where you need all the nuance that real cymbals, snare etc can give in an intimate situation.

Bummer about your equipment! That's a lot of money.

Have you contacted a lawyer? Insurance companies often take the tact that it is your fault because of x, y or z and try to see if you will go away.

Example - there might be a clause requiring an alarm, but the individual agent may reasonably be found negligent for not making SURE you knew about it. Confronted with such a suggestion from a lawyer - solicitor in your speak? - the agent may feel it prudent to honor the contract, rather than pay for your equipment himself.

at the risk of sounding utterly stupid, it was our own fault. Right at the top of the insurance policy documents was security requirements and it did clearly state we needed an alarm. It just turns out the member of my exband who was in charge of our insurance hadn't checked it properly. So we lost the lot and didn't have a leg to stand on! Personally i didn't lose much, just a bit of group owned recording gear, but the guitarist and bassist were proper gear heads and the majority of it all was the guitarists. A total downer of a situation, but not much we can do about it now. They're slowly re-buying their gear and i've got V now, so maybe we'll get back together in the future and continue what we were doing.

To answer your first question, I use my Vs for electronica post rockish type of sounds ( Warprecords, Instinct records, matador, fat cat etc...) lots of effects and tweakings, and never tried to simulate the real thing. Well I did at first, but then, because I didnt get very satisfying results, I just ended up thinking : Why not try to play on them what I cant play on an A kit ? And that worked. Sometimes I even play Dance beats and techno.
These unusual sounds also made me develop unusual drumming techniques, that involve "live" loops, glitches, clicks and things no "drum" teacher will ever teach.

yeah, the different sounds on the v's can definately affect playing technique and style. Get some freaky sound on the ride and just hit that with a simple kick snare pattern and it can sound real nice!!

I'm from birmingham, which is quite a way from london, but not too difficult to get to!

I play in a free jazz style,and one of the things on my list to do is to use the v's for stright jazz. ...and you guys are right nothing beats my old k ride.
