  • Jojo on e-drums

i came across this link while surfing.. jojo mayer on a simmons kit.
what struck me was he already had his mad single pedal skills back then
and how good the kit sounds and dynamics actually are..
i can remember simmons pads felt a lot like phonebooks.

I suspect that what he was playing was pre-recorded on a real a-kit and he's just miming to it on that Simmons. I may be wrong but my mate has one of those Simmons for his Industrial Metal band and it sounds nothing like that.

By 1986, Simmons was using softer pads and their top of the line units were samplers with interchangeable eproms. But, I don't ever remember them sounding that good! I suspect drbeat is right about them being pre-recorded.

        really ?
i thought that sound was incredible too,
        i suppose you're right then..

        edit :
looking with this in mind, i can
        see him 'missing' some crashes,
anyway, i think it's still a cool vid

It could be a Simmons SDX...

D'you remember those monsters...? Weren't they the first to have swiveling 'Simbols' and positional detection zones on the pads...?

I just found a site that had the SDX owner's manual on it. It was quite a machine at the time.

The SDX didn't come out till 1987. I still vote for drum-synching.

I agree Michael. Watch him, he's synching. There are a few mistakes, but the track is still pretty amazing.
