  • Best way to record from Yamaha Xpress4 to PC?

HI all. Just wondering the best way to record some live drum tracks to my PC from my Yamaha Xpress? DO I use the mic in function or do I need a midi interface or something?

The easiest way - Audio outs of module to inputs of an audio interface
The best way - MIDI out of module to MIDI in on a MIDI interface.

With MIDI you get 16 channels to work with. Most modules only have a handful of audio outs which gets very limiting. MIDI is only data so you will need to run though a VSTi in a sequencer such as Cakewalk Sonar which comes with Session Drummer 2, (a program I use these days).

Theres other VSTis such as Toontrack EZdrummer and BFD.

I use THIS EMU interface as a secondary MIDI I/O point and am quite happy with it.

As for inputting audio into a computer, you really should buy an audio interface instead of going though the line or mic inputs as you will get a lot of latency and poor quality.

My kit is custom running 10, 12, 14" toms, a 12" snare, 2 crash, 1 ride, 1 splash, and dual kick drum all plugged into a
Roland TD-6V module which runs MIDI to Superior Drummer 2
