  • Questions regarding several unrelated things

Hi all. I have several questions, but regarding many different topics, so I chose to just put them all into one big class-action query.

First, the Roland Rack. More specifically the older ones, I believe it is called the Trap Stand. Does it really need the reinforcement? This could go for most Roland racks, too I suppose. Those flat metal reinforcers that go from the foot bars to the vertical pipes; necessary? I noticed the V-Club rack doesn't have them. I didn't think the things hold enough weight to warrant it.

Secondly, this is a tracking question. I'm running a TD-5. I use a PD-7 as my snare. While it tracks my playing fairly well, rolls are a problem. Is it the module or my snare pad? I've never sat on an E-kit that had a PD-7 or -9 as a snare pad, and the only other pads I have are PD-5's. If I put a mesh pad(e.g., a PD-80R) on my TD-5K, will it give me my double-strokes and buzz rolls? Or does the module just not track those things well enough?

Thirdly, this deals with sound reinforcement. If any of you read my "Drumming In The Pits" post, you know that I had to kibosh the e-kit because of volume and sound difficulties (I'll be adding to that post shortly). To ensure that the next time I have to scrap my e's in favor of a's, it's because of tone and not of volume, I'll probably want to invest in some amplification. I've seen demonstrations of the new TDA-400, and I have to say, I'm impressed. However, that thing has a lot of bulk to it, and size of equipment is somewhat of a factor. Does anyone know anything about the PM-1? Seems to me it's be adequate for small gigs, and for larger ones, it could be hooked into a larger PA, yes? For my own monitoring, is there any reason I couldn't just use my headphones?

Well, I think that's about it for me. Thank you all in advance, hope to hear from you soon.

I like doing this. I like bringing a drum-less monitor mix from the board into my AuxIn and then mixing that with my drums into the headphones. By mixing them IN the TD8 I can adjust the drums-to-orchestra balance to MY taste. With the TD8 (and others?) you can set it up so that the AuxIn does NOT go out the mains - thus preventing the board from get the monitor mix sent back to it via the TD8. Another advantage: with headphones on you don't have to listen to criticism from bass playing music educators.

When I had my PD-7's hooked up to my TD-8, they could track an open roll fairly well. Buzz rolls present more of a challenge for the module. I would say the problem is not the pad. Try setting your Threshold to 0 if possible on the TD-5K, and "disable" other settings which could cause problems, e.g. crosstalk, mask time, and retrigger cancel.
