  • drumming really hurts..

When i play after about 15 minutes a get a lot of pain on my right hand between the thumb and my pointing finger, the 2 fingers that actually control the counting on the hats and the ride.

When i pull my thumb backwards i hear a bone click like it;s moving all the time from it's place.First i thought that it was because i wasn't holding the sticks properly but even when i improved the way to hold and control i still got the pain.No i haven't gone to the doc yet because he will tell me to stop drumming and i will then have to kill him

Does anyone have the same prob ?

It'll pass, I get this sometimes, normally if I've had a couple of days off, but it's normal as far as I know. I wouldn't worry. Try some hand exercises to strengthen grip.

I get something like that, in my pinkie, a hard spot on the ligament, that clicks and is painful..it goes away with rest.. unhappily, i never rest...

Lol. You guys are always sending well timed distracting emails.
I think that we all suffer some soft tissue damage to our hands because of drumming. I have, and did have x rays on my hand because the shooting pain I was getting if I put pressure on it was worrying. However, there's nothing that can be done. We have to suffer for our art!

Be careful, as you should NEVER play in pain. It could cause way more problems down the road. You might be over-exerting it, which rest and exercise should cure. It is possible that it is technique, so a good instructor may be worth seeing.
However, if it is a more serious problem, a doc should look at it.
              Does that narrow your options?
Seriously, first sign of pain, STOP.
If in a gig, finish as best you can, then get help.

it might be cause i play stressed but i see that's it's not only me
when i played open handed a couble of weeks ago it helped but the hat in the middle especially with rubber toms made me hit the hat insted of the toms and this was even worse than the hand pain

Try a velcro elastic wrist support. It may help.

                    Hampis,

you may have DeQuervain's tenosynovitis, you should be a able to find info about it on the web. Rest, ice, anti-inflammatories, cortisone shots, stretches/exercises, proper technique can all help. some end up needing surgery.

WARNING: this is a v-drums forum and in no way substitutes for an actual examination/diagnosis by a qualified health care practitioner. Do not take this advice if you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant. Do not take this advice with MAOI inhibitors. Ask you doctor is you are healthy enough for drumming activities. Men taking nitrates may experience an unsafe drop in blood pressure.

but seriously, look up the DeQuervain's

I used to get pain when I was using regular sticks to hit my rubber pads. I switched over to zildjan anti vibes and the pain lessened. Then when I switched to the mesh heads I have'nt had any real problems. The only time now I get any pain is if I am playing a really fast beat, like AC/DC Let ther be rock. I think this is just because I haven't built up the endurance to play fast beats like that. If I try to play everlong or run to the hills I can't keep the speed for any amount of time and I usually just quit playing the song.
