  • roland clamps vs rack?

I've seen a lot of racks being scratched from roland clamps (regular clamps and mds-12/20). how come are plastic clamps scratching the black paint from the rack? any idea on how to counter this from happening?

I'm don't want my rack to be simple raw metal with no finish. that would probably force me to buy a gibraltar rack later on because I'll be travelling a lot with my kit.

    thanks

ps: also if you can answer this I'd be pleased: on the td-3 and td-9 kits, the hihat is a cy-5 and is controlled by an fd-8. would a cy-8 be better as a hihat and why is the cy-5 used over the cy-8. both have a 12 inch playing surface. SE didn't help me on that one

    thanks again

    Hi gostviper,

I think the only way is to loosen the clamps right off and expand them out before sliding them along the tubes - it is really hard to avoid scratching. If you're moving around regularly I think scratching is just a consequence of this and you're probably better going with the chrome plated racks instead in this situation (and don't let a roadie touch them.....)

I've often wondered the same as you about CY-5 vs CY-8 for hihat and will be interested to hear what the others say about this.

thanks hercules for the info about the rack.

I guess I'll make my own gibraltar rack with a bunch of their tubes. I'll sell the rack on here for a fair price and I'll make sure I'm not mounting anything on it

it's a sad thing because I liked the colour and snare arm as well as the cables inside of it.

I've used both CY-8 and CY-5 as hi-hat and they're very similar in practice. Neither really has a 12 inch playing surface; that's just Roland hype. It's 5"x11" on a CY-8 and 4"x9" on a CY-5. (Even the official specifications say that the CY-8 is less than 12" diameter and the CY-5 is less than 10" diameter.) The CY-5 can be easier to mount as hi-hat because it comes with a clutch attachment for an L-rod.

I changed my cy 8 for a cy 5..I feel the cy 5 has a better, er, feel, and is a bit quieter...the 8 is good for crashes, but I didnt like it either as a high hat or a ride...
