  • Peg (Steely Dan) cover

While working my way up to a couple of other songs, I figured I would post this one. I'm really proud that I did it in only two takes with no editing. Hopefully I can do as well on subsequent videos, being as I haven't a lot of spare time.

As always comments, critical and otherwise, are welcome.

Sounds good. I grew up listening to that song. I love Steely Dan.

Nice hi-hat and snare ghost note work! Once again, great job!

I see you got the Roland logo on your headphones flipped around. It's all about marketing... !
        VDrums: a cluster of bits including TDW-20 and TD-3 modules, KD-85, PD-85(2), PD-8(5), CY-12(3), CY-8(2), CY-5(3), Kit Toys china, all on an MDS-6SL+ rack, SPD-S, VEX, VDL
        ZDrums: a Zendrum ZCSZX
ADrums: an eight piece Tama Rockstar kit with lots o' Zildjians
Gender-Conflicted Drums: a stock PDP Chameleon with a few Zildjians (a conversion just waiting to happen... then it can go both ways!)

              Hey Sticky,

Nice job again - very relaxed and smooth.

I don't have this song on disk (and it's a bit hard to hear on the tube vids) but is there a double beat on the KD in the chorus - I can see your foot playing a single and I can't tell whether it's the SD drummer or bass playing a double.

Roland must be paying you those big bikkies to keep up that advertising !!

I liked how you did the fade out of the vid as the song was fading away too - ads a nice touch of professionalism.

I'm looking forward to the Led Zep song now

                Thanks all for the comments.

John.b - I can never tell how the mix is going to come out after YouTube gets through compressing it. PM me if you would like me to send you an MP3 with the kick louder.

Hercules - Thanks for the production props. I am using a $50 program I got at Frye's (Magix Movie Edit Pro 14). Once I have gotten used to it, it is fairly easy to work. Lots of effects available I have yet to explore. On the extra kick beats in the chorus, you have a better ear than I do! I can hear a lot of extra stuff going on, but I can't tell if it's kick drum or Chuck Rainey's thumping bass line, to be honest. Would you mind PM'ing me a notation of what you are hearing (kick line alone will suffice)? Oh, yeah! Raking in the sponsorship bucks, uh-huh. NOT!

If you are waiting to hear "Good Times, Bad Times", all I can say is don't hold your breath too hard. There's a whole new level of independence I have to achieve to play that song, but I will try. I'm going to work on "Home at Last" and then see if I can squeeze out "I Got the News". If I can do a half-decent job on those I will give Donald and Walter a break. They're getting tired of sleeping on the fold-out sofa in the living room!

Just wanted to confirm that's not a drumless track you're working with there? I think I hear the orginal drums in the back. If it would happen to be drumless, I need a copy!!!

By the way, I've never been wild about the way they mixed Michael McDonald's backgound vocals on that tune, but otherwise I love it.

Great work there Stick! That's a tough groove!

                    Mixxit,

                    Thanks!

That is the entire original by Steely Dan, so yes, you are hearing other drums, which is why I set my drums up higher in the mix.

I have a drumless version, but it does not have vocals. I thought that would sound a little flat, so I went with SD's version. Also, it's a tiny bit slower than the original. PM me and I will email a copy to you (goes for everyone).

I know! It bugs me! My left foot is wanting to tap, but I have to keep the hat closed. My kit sits on two layers of carpet (with carpet pad beneath), and since it is a two-legged stand, not as stable as I would like it to be. Maybe I need to attach it to the rack...

                          Thanks bakerboy!

                            Hi Sticky,

Sorry about the delay, I had to learn to read music and then create a software package that I could write the notation in (seeing my handwriting is illegible)......

This is what I think I'm hearing from the kick (minus your snare ghost notes):

                              Hercules,

Sorry you went to all that trouble, but it will serve you well in the future!

I hear what you are talking about, but I'm still not sure that its not the bass guitar. Chuck Rainey used a technique where he popped the notes with his thumb, resulting in a very percussive sound. I'm going to see if I can track down an "official" chart for that song.

                              Thanks for keeping it interesting!

                              EDIT;

Amazing thing, the internet. I found a site with lots of transcripts:
A collection of hundreds of songs of drum sheet music, conveniently available for instant download and printing. All transcriptions by James Morton.

Downloaded the chart for Peg, and it is simpler even than what I was playing (see attached Jpegs).

I also tend to make the hihat line more complicated than the original, and I just plain blew off the cymbal accents in the little kick drum bridge from the end of the chorus to the 2nd intro for no other reason than I didn't feel like playing them.

Now, are these the definitive charts? Probably not. Could it be that there are more kick notes in there? Entirely likely. I might play around with them just to prove to myself I can do it.

Again, Herc, thanks for keeping it interesting!
