  • Poll: Can you play a good shuffle

i.e. Rosanna, fool in the rain.

I certainly have struggled. I'm been playing 25 years but fake most stuff.

The truth now folks! Its gotta have all the ghost notes, triplet ostinato, etc

If you're having trouble figuring out what is an "awesome" shuffle, just listen to the master...

These are not really the most complicated beats around. I think people try to concentrate to much on each hit instead of just relaxing into the groove. These patterns are not fixed, Im sure Bonham and Porcaro never played these exactly the same every time hit fot hit but still kept the main groove and feel there.

Its best to go for the groove instead of replication, thats what drum machines are for.

Funny you should ask that. I have been practicing my Purdy Shuffle till it swings! I finally got a grooving kick beat and proper ghost notes. Normally I am a slugger, so any beat I can play with finesse is an accomplishment!

I agree, but good is good. Its complicated to me! Having trouble getting it... I spent a large portion of today just doing the 2 beats of the triplet on the HH, simple bass and snare... I think I'll get it soon. I can rock Rosanna with 8th notes. When I do the proper ostinato everything becomes difficult.

I would rather have had another option between "faking it" and "awesome". I can say I have been pleased with my progress of late. I can do "Peg" almost as good as the original. "Babylon Sisters" and "Reeling in the Years" are coming along nicely, but I haven't quite nailed the little snare ruffs. I know if I tried Rosanna I would have a little trouble with the tempo, but would likely be able to do a passable job with it with a little work.

I agree with Stixx - the most important thing is to feel the groove.

Learned both many years ago, had to do Fool in the rain a couple weeks ago and had trouble remembering it at first. As Mr Stixx pointed out, feel the groove and it will come to you. Stickinthemud brought back memories of learning 'Reeling in the years' that was harder than Rosanna ,fool in the rain for me. Check out 'T Bone shuffle' from Buddy Guy and Junior Wells ..nice groove, shuffle.

I posted this about a month ago here. It's me hacking my way through a Purdie shuffle on Steely Dan's "Home at Last".
I agree that "feeling it" goes along way to doing it right. During the first minute or so, I was trying much too hard and it shows. Then I settled in and it got easier...until the drum fills in the middle.

I guess I'm in the "I can fake it" category.

I think the shuffle is one of the few techinques my instructor taught me that I didn't bother to try and improve on by web based study. So I learnt by ear and demonstration rather than by reading the actual notes. I practice it just for fun from time to time without taking it all that seriously.

I think I do a passable job of the basic pattern, but its a lot different practicing on the TD6 compared to playing it the acoustic set I was taught it on (because of the differences with the ride and hi-hat pedal).

well the link I posted for "awesome" does seem to be down. Its Bonham doing the track for Fool in the Rain just drums, luckily I downloaded it so I still have it. Guess I got lucky getting it before it was gone.
