  • The most famous drummer

Okay, Who do you think is the worlds most famous drummer. Not the best or the one who has the biggest drumset, but the most well known drummer. Alive or dead. We should probably do the top 5 as there are so many. Here is my choices:

    1) Ringo Starr
    2) Buddy Rich
    3) Neil Pert
    4) Gene Krupa
    5) Steve Gadd

    1 Ringo Starr
    2 Lars Ulrich
    3 Peart
    4) Rich
    5) Gadd EDIT: Stewart Copeland in as a sub.

again, in terms of Q -quotion, or fame, not in terms of skill, importance, or anything like that....

By most popular, I'm guessing "most well known" by the general public, world-wide.....hmmm.

      1. Ringo
      2. Phil Collins
      3. Buddy Rich
      4. Animal
      5. Little Drummer Boy

I think youll find LDB is very much an american phenomena, and Animal, who inspired me to be a drummer, i fear is forgotten by the newer generations, as he has been out of the lime light for a while...lucky I still have my DVDs of him!

but phil collins makes me think that i should have found room on my list for Stewart Copeland....

Yes, Neil Peart is one of the "best" drummers, but more popular?... I would say Tommy Lee is. What about Tommy Lee people?

Very subjective, but from a "typical person's" point of view...

                Peart
                Rich
                Weckl
                Portnoy
                Lee

...I wasn't sure where to put Bozzio, but he belongs in those five.

I could add a hundred more...

In coming up with my list, I thought:
If I showed a photo, or played a sound clip of "X" drummer or "Y" drummer to 10 random people in major cities around the world, which drummers would be recognized most?

As drummers, we all know how famous Gadd and Peart are, but I think to most people world-wide, when looking at a photo or hearing a song... would have no idea who they are.

I agree...and i based it on what non-drumming people I know have talked about, and who THEY would know....

hmm yes tommy lee, quite possibly...in the top 10 anyway.

Urlich is very well known in Europe.

And Tommy Lee is recognizable to many NOT for his drumming or his face...
*ahem*....if you know what I mean...

Ah yes, you obviously are thinking of his...tattoos, arent you?

yes, but i think phil collins is now known more for his singing/songwriting than for his drum playing...

it just goes to show, lots of grey areas, lots of subjective judging...

What, no love for Keith Moon? He is definitely one of the iconic drummers.

Picking the most famous drummers is a bit difficult as it changes with time and place. Thank goodness we don't have to pick "best" drummers!
