I think you'll find in the majority of situations the correct use of a semicolon is where you want to show a connection between independent sentences, so the alternative is a full stop (or period). In the following example a conjunction wouldn't really work.

A semicolon should not be used in place of a comma; this is a very common mistake.

But this point is the other extreme, and is just as annoying as a complete disregard for punctuation.

To bring it full circle, there's a chapter in Brett Easton Ellis's novel American Psycho where the main character gives a "review" of a Genesis or Phil Collins album that's pretty impressive in its lunacy. (Be warned other chapters go into just as much detail in describing torture and other nasty stuff, and the detached way in which it's done makes it even more disturbing.)
Still miss you baby, but my aim's gettin' better...

      Hey guys and gals,

I PM'd Stodgey and apologized. I did not mean to hijack this thread. Stodgey; did you ever get your question answered?

The best Phil Collins drum sounds are from Selling England By the Pound, back when he was just the drummer. Abacab from their "Pop" era has some amazing drum sounds as well.

Maybe the OP's first language is Welsh. How well do you speak a Celtic language? In any case, I say he's a "hunt and peck" typist; he's not keen on seeking out punctuation keys (see, I could just have easily used and instead of the semi-colon).

          Cheers.

          Steve

EDIT: The Phil Collins stuff is from his work with Genesis. Don't care much for his solo stuff or any Genesis after Wind & Wuthering. Duke is OK, but nowhere near as adventurous or complex as the earlier stuff.
          thanks for that .

                Hercules,

Yes, Genesis was pretty much the soundtrack to my youth. I got Nursery Cryme when I was 13 (showing my age) and was hooked from then on. I used to practice for hours to Live (1973), so Phil Collins along with Bill Bruford and of course, Ringo were in many ways my first drum teachers. It's not so much that I mind that they went commercial, as the way they did it. The Police were/are commercial, but never mundane or sappy in the same manner that Genesis became. Anyway, nice to meet some fellow fans.

                snick59,

Yeah, I'm a Brand X fan as well. Unorthodox Behaviour has some spellbinding drumming on it. You're also correct about The Musical Box. It's uncanny how close they are to the real thing, having seen the real thing many times. They come to Atlanta every couple of years, and I've seen them do Foxtrot and Selling England and was hoping to see them do the Lamb, but I think they've stopped that now.

                ramondo,

You could use however or although in your example.

                Cheers.

                Steve
