  • Is the TD-20 end-of-lifed?

A friend of mine told me that Roland has stopped making the TD-20. (He heard it from his Sweetwater rep.)

Is that true? I thought that with Roland releasing the TDW-20 expansion card, the TD20 platform still has some life in it.

Nope, sounds like a load of bull to me. Why on earth would Roland pull their flagship when they've just released an upgrade which requires the module?!?!?!?

It sounds more plausible that Roland will stop selling the TD-20 kit WITHOUT the TDW-20 factory installed, so they are probably planning ahead for that. As I recall, that is what happened with the TD-10 sku once the TDW-1 was released.

No, but as Joe mentioned, they may offer it as an "expanded" kit now.

Not that it matters but I don't recall the TD-10 being sold new with the TDW-1 already installed. Seems to me they maximize sales by selling them separately.

Besides, wouldn't that put the combo price as something like $2400? That sounds like it's put further out of the reach of a lot of folks. That doesn't sound like something Roland would do. Of course one might expect some kind of discount on the combo deal but it's still a lot of bucks for a module.

I don't know about the individual module sales, but I was speaking of the full kit. Once the TDW-1 was released, they began selling the kit with the CY cymbals and TDW-1. At least, that is what I seem to remember. Depends on if we are talking about the TD-20 as a module, or the full kit, I suppose. It does seem likely that Roland would start clearing out existing inventory of the TD-20 Kits and creating a new Sku.

You're right. When I bought the V-Session kit it came with a TD-10, as well as the TDW-1, although it hadn't been installed.

I would hope Roland would discontinue it. Can you imaging what your TD-20 would be worth in about a month? ... not that I would sell mine. I'm betting that they will continue to produce it until they come up with a better unit.

What td series will be next? I am still trying to work my way up to a double digit td. But I really like my td 8.

I was referring to module sales and that they didn't sell them installed. Anywho, what really got my attention was the logic in forcing folks to buy the module and card - just doesn't make good sense. Many folks can barely afford the module alone now. Money is tight, they just had an increase and now they force another $4-500 more to an already expensive unit? They do seem to know their market and I've always said they are good at controlling inventory and price but I'm just having a hard time believing this is accurate info.

I agree Boingo. Makes no sense to sell the module with the card pre installed. They'd maintain a greater market share by selling them separately.

From my memory (which isn't the best at the best of timeS) they were selling TD-10 expanded modules as part of a kit with the expansion board installed - as Joe stated. But modules by themselves were just that. But you never know what the guys in Roland marketing HQ have up their sleeve re sales strategies.

Hmm... installing a TDW-1 in a TD-20, wonder what that would give?
