  • flams, rolls and swells

    I think that right from the title of this post most people may know what Im thinking. Is it just me or are some of the most basic things difficult to pull properly on v's. I've begun to realize how much my playing style is changing due to vdrums. I constantly find my self avoind snare rolls and flams because of how cheap the can sound if not perfectly executed.

    I don't quite agree. It really depends on the sounds (samples) you're using. I for one am not a fan of sets like RealDeal (or whatever it's called ... never use it) and others. They sound exactly like what you are describing.

    But I have many sets that I think these techniques can be executed quite well with.
    My equipment:
    :: (Expanded, TDW-1 with V-Cymbal Control)
    :: 2x CY-15R, 1x CY12H, 2 CY12R/C
    :: 1x Pad-120, 8x Pad-80R, 6x PD-7, 1x PD-9, 1x KD-120
    :: 1x FD-7
    :: 1x Roland MDS-10, 6x Sonor Delite double cymbal stands
    :: 1x DW 5000 Pedal
    :: 1x Mackie 1202 VLZ
    :: 1x NAD C521 CD-Player

    To be expanded soon ...

      I agree and might add that a poorly executed flam sounds bad on an acoustic drum too. I can say that being forced to pay attention to my execution isn't exactly a bad thing. I have a lot less concern with this compared with where I was 3 yrs ago.

      I tend to use snares set to the loose setting. The tighter the snare the worse the rolls can sound. That comes with the territory with E's (machine gunning in particular). As far as swells, I have a few favorites. Part of why they are favorites is because they have swell swells. Trigger settings help a lot here and if you really hit hard, I could see where swells could be less than smooth.

        Are things like rolls and flams something that the V's just aren't able to track? Or are you still trying to use your "A-chops" instead of your "V-chops"? Wasn't the whole point of the mesh-head/positional-sensing technology so that the pads would be able to track these kinds of techniques?

        Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a discussion a while back about using different techniques for pads as aopposed to drums?

        As far as swells go, my module has what I feel is a pretty convincing cymbal roll sample. When I get my full E's going, I usually add an SPD-6 off to the side as an electronic everything-table and put the swell sound on there, so I don't have to worry about it getting in the way of my other cymbals.

          achops and vchops. See that is what im talking about. Im beginning to wonder if these sacrifices are truly worth the advantages of edrums. maybe i just need an "a" kit as well as a "v" kit. Unfortunately, due to the price of edrums, i had to sell my acoustic kit to merely buy accesories for the vdrums(speakers,xtra pads,subwoofer....etc). I find myself felling this way more and more often now. It used to come and go. Every time i play i find myself avoiding really kool fills and patterns because they sound like sh1t.

            Don't feel bad about it. A lot pf people on this board will tell you that E's and A's are seperate animals. To a certain extent, I agree with them. You see the same thing in all realms of the percussive field. People use/need different sets of muscular tools for set, hand drums, timpani, keyboards, etc. I have an a-kit as well as an e-kit, and I mix some components all the time. If you don't want to sacrifice your a-chops, why not look into acoustic triggering? You lose a bit of the portability and such, but you could get some of your fills and patterns back.

              Here's what I've learned:

              They are different animals and some of my A chops had to be converted to work better on V's. But I'm very used to that now and my v-chops tend to transfer back to A's just fine.

              I'm not the cleanest drummer in the world anyway, but I feel like, since the work great on A's now, I'm probably doing them better as a result.

              Becuase the Vs sound so "good", it's easy for a non-drummer to kinda sound like they can play, but only on the surface. They really force you to be more acurate than A's, because you don't have the betefit of the active snares and tom ring and such to compensate for all the crap, at least that' is true for me. On V's, my crap just shines right through, wheras on A's, it is well masked.

              Just some thoughts.

                Never give up your acoustic drums completely!

                If you have a chance to go play an Akit, do it!

                Some samples are better than others for flams and such. Tricky settings, tricky executions.
