what do i need to use a monitor

of that nature, what else would i need to amplify my vcustoms for parcticing pruposes?

Powered speakers are what most have been using, myself included. Search for JBL Eon G2 and Mackie using the search function and you will see there has been extensive info and opinion posted.

For practicing I would use a good pair of head phones.

For live playing:
a. a sound system with enough head room (capability to amplify the drum sounds)
b. output (number of decibels measured at 1 metre) is more important than the number of watts. A 200 watt amp can give 100 dBa, the same amp with 400 watt only 103 dBa and the same amp with 800 wat only 106 dBa.
c. at least a 15 inch speaker for the lower tones or one of the new 12 inch speakers which can be found in the Mackies and JBL's. Those speakers have more low end. Older speakers don't and then you need a 15 inch or even 18 inch for the bass drum.
d. if you want to have control on separate channels: a mixer
e. (as other members around this discussion board say) some outboard gear like effect processors, compressors or an enhancer. I have no expierence with these myself but do search in the topic sound processing or live playing

Your ears will thank you if you do without the monitors, and go for an in-ear monitor system with custom-molded earpieces instead. It's about the same investment, it's smaller to carry, and you'll actually one day be able to hear what your grandkids are saying without the help of a hearing aid.

i should have been more specific...

the monitor is something i saw for sale
very cheap and was thinking about using it
as a personal practice monitor. i was just wondering if i could do it with only my TD-8K and the monitor or if i needed some other source of power or amplification.

you need some sort of power for the monitor. A powered mixer would be the best bet. The mackie and g2 are self powered which makes them great edrum monitors.

I use a Crate keyboard apm and it works great. It has 4 inputs, an 8 band EQ and a built in tilt. Very handy reletively cheap. Now if I can just get the guys to turn down a little everything would be perfect. Guitar players have no since of volume, wait that is not true they have load and loader!!
