  • E-Drum's Toy-like Appearance

This thread continues where the V-Cymbals Confuse Me thread left off because it went off-topic. bad karma was frustrated at being turned down a position due to e-drums. I partial quote him as follows ..."... just gets so damn frustrating. That term, real drums. Do these look like a *&%# kids toy?

YES! IMHO, to me, todays e-drums do look like toys. When they 1st came out they did not. They looked very sci-fi or, as I put it back then, radical! Why manufacturer's gravitated towards an acoustic look, I'll never know. There's been no big noise from e-guitar players complaining that their rigs don't look like acoustics. I do not see e-keyboard players complaining about their units not resembling a Steinway or Hammond console. E-Bass players seem happy that their rigs do not resemble an upright. Where is the noise from the e-drumming community to make these thing look acoustic coming from? When I 1st joined this forum I clearly declared that I was disatisfied with today's e-drum appearance. To me even my so-called monster-set look like toys next to my 1970 Black Diamond-Pearl 9-piece Ludwigs.

    Come on,
    -Marc.

Another solution: V-Customs. Heard of them? $^)

Of course, the nice compromise would be 10" and 12" pads (plus 8" ones) with the V-Custom PD-80 design, which are closer to Hart pads in appearance. And they're nicely transportable: All of my drum & cymbal pads (4+5), plus pedals and bar trigger, fit nicely into a medium-large cooler.

I agree the PD100/120's are too acoustic-looking and unnecessarily bulky. That's one reason why I went with the Customs.

marc maybe you don't understand.I was trying to make the point that this is a musical instrument, not a childs toy or a illusion. They ARE real.Just because they are not accoustics, other (so called )musicians feel they are not.As I stated in the other post,If you want me to use accoustics, then the keyboard player looses that korg and starts hauling around a baby grand.I am sorry you have issues with e-drums apperance from the manufactures,I also use hart pads and e-cymbal 2's.I hope to get pictures up soon.Maybe if you don't like them either, you can biuld your own any way you like.Personally,I like the little compact thing I got.Knowing how much I paid for them,I know they are real.

This just sounds fitting to me:

"Welcome to the grand illusion, come on in and see whats happening .pay the price get your tickets for the show."

"They show you photographs,of how your life should be. Thats just someone else's fantasies."

Szvook: I could not agree more.I used Binarys advice, and gave them a cd that we recorded live on a 8 track through the board. They loved it. I told them that was my v's and they didn't believe it.An old klingon proverb is that revenge is a dish that is best served cold.So guess who I am not going to play with.

Good point Marc. E-drums do look like toys and if the manufacturers want the whole drum comunity using e-drums (mpfff....) they need to change...

On the other hand: when mr. Les Paul came with his first e-guitar at Gibson it looked like a plank. Or it was a plank. But how does the Gibson Les Paul or Fender Stratocaster resemble to an acoustic guitar?

Different instruments? Mmmmm.... don't think so. As long as e-drum manufacturers sample real drums, make hi-hat controllers, bass drums and snare pads with rim click and rim shot functions, I don't think e-drums are that different. They only look different. And that's the problem. We drummers are quite conventional. Just remember the North and Staccato drums you posted in another topic. All fine inventions but drummers did not want them because of the outward appearance.

I saw a band the other day and the drummer was using a stock Yamaha DTXpress kit and it was pumped thru the house PA and the balance was all wrong and it sounded like ****....on top of it he was using real cymbals that were miked with crappy mikes...

Now any average musician would see what I saw and say "electronic drums suck" without really knowing what someone who knows what the hell they are doing could do....

Anyone who saw the Pat Metheny concert on PBS with Anton Fig and his V's with an SPD-20
could never in God's Holy Earth call E-drums "toys"...

I hope to God it never goes back to the days of a million roto toms and 65 cymbals, double bass, gongs all over the place, etc...
                IMHO, it looks totally moronic....

I think the newer Roland pads look nice. What I did was install the triggering gear into a set of acoustics and ended up with the silent mesh pads, looking like acoustic drums. The roland pads are thick enough to pass for a small drum, and look excellent on the rack. I'd use them if they weren't so expensive. My acoustic conversion cost 1/4 the price a set of pads would, and trigger exactly the same. For transport the Roland pads are the way to go.

I think you missed my point and that maybe you don't understand. Remember the keyword in the title of this thread "...Appearance". And it is the toy-like appearance of e-drums that are causing these closed-minded vanity-filled jerks to turn prospective e-drummers away. I agree with BiNaRy. Let's do go over there and kick some butt.

Sorry v-custom peoples, to me, they are even more toy-looking, being on a smaller rack and plastic and all. Please don't hit me.

Still, toy-like or not, once you put the juice to it, I think a well-calibrated E will kick the living hell out of acoustics any day of the year. Praise the powers that we are living in those days.

My favorite old e-drums were the Dynacord ADD Ones, they looked like a bloody tree on that stand!

Yeah, OK. IF, you want that "acoustic" look for E's. I prefer something electronic looking, like tekno-future-goth-industrial, like sci-fi, like radical, like ...

                            or

                            or

                            or

Too bad they don't show the wires. That would really complete the "electro-visual" effect. I sorta like the last one. Reminds me of an evil metallic insect or something.
