  • Just received V-Session

    Hi Everyone,

First a bit of background. Began learning drums and percussion back it 1974 when i was about 10 and played for many years. Home-grown bands, marching bands, H.S. Jazz band, music theory, recording studio, touring... Sadly, been away from the drums for over 15 years now. i owned Synare/Syndrum, Simmons, Tama acoustic (think of a set/mix echoing Neil Peart and Bill Bruford in the mid 80's).

Well, decided to get back into it and got the Roland V-Session after much research and thought. All i can say is WOW! Now don't get me wrong, wish it sampled and a few other tricks the old Simmons ?SDX? did. Still, the cymbals sound impressive (all things considered) and the "feel" and playability/flexibility is outstanding. Sure, a few minor quibbles, yet all in all a very impressive set IMHO.

Received the set at 12pm, had it all setup and basically tweaked by 3pm and have been playing for many hours. Hmmm... better spend some time off the set and back on the basic rudiments and study my Jack DeJohnette/Charlie Perry "The Art of Modern Jazz" book (first edition no less bought new way back when).

Thanks for your time and reading my rantings. Just wanted to also thank everyone (BIG PROPS) as i have been silent lurking for a while getting tips and tricks. Keeps me from asking the same thing 100's of other did.

Have a great night and as always...

Enjoy the music (Rush "Hemispheres" right now),

      Chris,

      >>>If you're anything like me, you came for the V-Drum information, but you'll stay for the food.<<<

LOL! i came for the exotic coffee and stayed for the cigars :-) . Actually i seem to have most things going and tweaked EXCEPT stupid me does not have a memory card. This leads to... Worse still, i did not save the original factory presets before doing the upgrade when the TDW-1 ask to upgrade. Guess i'll have to get the memory card and beg someone here to copy the factory present to it.

Well... we live, we learn. i'll order the memory card tomorrow :-)

      Enjoy the music,

I'd go ahead and order the mem card but you don't need to do it for the presets. They are still there. Read up on the copy feature in the TDW-1 manual.

          Boingo,

          >>>>I'd go ahead and order the mem card but you don't need to do it for the presets. They are still there. Read up on the copy feature in the TDW-1 manual.<<<

That section seemed a bit confusing and lacked details for me (page 7 in the TDW-1 manual).

What is not clear is that will this also affect my setup changes? As you well know various adjustment MUST be made for the bass drum and ride cymbal OR does it just load the sets only?

Of course i am curious if there are truly two BANKS of fifty or is there a menu that allows me to chose between the TD-10 fifty sets or the TDW-1 fifty? i started to make the change as on page 7 in the TDW-1 manual though backed out UNTIL i get a memory card so i have all the changes i have made so far properly backed up.

Have already read ALL owners manuals twice BTW.

Thanks for your time. ALL help is ALWAYS appreciated.

Did you have to install the TDW-1 or just activate it? I guess I assumed it was ready to go with the V Session.

              Cliff,

              >>>Did you have to install the TDW-1 or just activate it? I guess I assumed it was ready to go with the V Session.<<<

The V-Session comes with the TDW-1 board, though it needs to be user installed into the TD-10. Naturally i installed it while setting the drumset up for the first time. Then when i FIRST turned the unit on, it asks if i want to flash update it. As the old stock ROM seemed to be dated two years ago and the new TDW-1 rom wanted to flash the new data created only a few months or so ago, as a computer geek you NATURALLY want to have the newest "drivers" so i told it to go ahead and flash the stock rom BEFORE i carefully read the owners manual that asks to save the data BEFORE flashing it (as i hastily did).

Since everything is new, you probably haven't customized any kits. If you have, the memory card or sysex software is needed to save them - otherwise, they're toast once overwriten.

Pick a couple kits you want to overwrite. Go to TOOLS, COPY. On the top of the display you will see "kit to copy from" and on the bottom, "kit to copy to". Dial to the left until you see kits labeled TD-10... Select the (preset) TD-10 kit you want to hear. On the bottom, select the User Kit you want to overwrite (User Kit = one of the 50 kits you can currently access). Press COPY, EXEC and you're done. If you had a mem card, you could save your customized kits to the card or exchange from the card and brain.

You can restore the TDW-1 preset kit in the same manner or you can re-initialize all the TDW-1 kits by using SETUP, UTIL, INIT. This option initializes ALL settings to the factory defaults for the TDW-1 so be careful.

Like I said, buy a card anyway. There are other card options I haven't covered.

                Hope this helps.

                    Boingo,

Thanks, now it makes more sense. Just DO NOT want to fully reinitilize the set as i set the pressure sensitivities and other "necessary" changes so the set works for me well (and the hardware is configured for the new cymbals, etc).

In any event i bought a card today and it should be here next week. This way the changes that have been made to varioius sets is saves just in case. Also look forward to trying VKitTrans and the kits available here :-)
