  • Are You a Drummer or a V-Drummer?

I got the inspiration for this thread from the nice gentleman who started the "Do ALL of you COMPLETELY suck?!" thread.

Are you a drummer or a v-drummer? I definitely consider myself a drummer who just happens to play v-drums. In fact, if I lived out in the country with nobody near to bother, I'd probably play acoustic drums.

To be honest, it kind of bothers me that somebody is specifically looking for a v-drummer. Just like it bothers me when a band won't take you because of your v-drums. We all know we can emulate any acoustic drum sound on a v-kit. Why does anybody care what we play as long as it sounds right?

I'd refer to myself as a e-drummer, who uses V-Drums. My acoustics have been retired indefinitely, and if a band doesn't want a drummer because they play Rolands, they're probably the same ones who'd turn you down cause you happen to play Pearl or Yamaha instead of OCDP or DW which has happened to me on numerous occasions. Those guys are obviously too shallow to care about your playing abilities and are only concerned in fashion trends. If a band gives me a reason like that they're obviously not the right band for me.
Some people are more concerned with appearance than sound, and are too busy emulating current stars stage setups than actually creating something new, and I don't want to be in an environment like that (Hey, can you set up like [John Otto/David Silveria/random happening drummer's name here]? He's cool, cause his set looks cool).
I happen to think my V's look sharp on stage, they sound fantastic, and let's face it, no one in the audience gives a rat's ass about what the drummer's using, or if the guitarist is playing a Strat or a Les Paul, most of them can't tell the difference anyway, IMHO, as long as the band sounds good, they'll enjoy themselves. And if the guys in the band really want a DW logo on the front of a bassdrum, I'll get a Spacemuffins kick and put a DW front head on it. ;-)

It's kind of funny that you started this thread today. Until about two years ago, I had always been a drummer that looked at Edrums with some disdain. That is until one day while killing time at a music store I decided to sit down and play with a set of V-Drums. I knew that this was exactly what I needed in the group I had just started playing with. I have never regreted the purchase.

About two hours ago I sold my Yamaha kit to an old friend of mine. I help him load them into his van with a slight lump in my throat. This is the first day in about 30 years that I haven't owned an acoustic drumset.

          I used to be a drummer, now I'm just a V-drummer.

I sold my beautiful Premier kit about 8 years ago to put a down payment on a house. I didn't have a set at all until a week ago, when I picked up a V-Pro. I went with electrics strictly for practical reasons (volume & tuning). I felt they were close enough to the real thing for me. However, I'm still dying to go out and buy a new DW acoustic kit.

Who knows, I could be converted completely too. I guess only time will tell what the future holds for me.

For the first time in quite a long time I have the space and relative distance from neighbors to play an acoustic kit. What do I Do?

              I buy an Ekit!

I guess the overall ability to play at almost anytime and record with the greatest of ease won out over the acoustic.

              Now I am a V Drummer!

Are you serious? Man, that's pretty pathetic.

By the way, it's funny that you mentioned John Otto and David Silveira in your post. Last time I checked, they were both using V-drums in their setups.......

I am a Musician first and foremost, who has found his particular musical talant and desires in the percussion field. I focus the majority of my musical enegies with the trap kit, with the VDrums being the primary musical tool of choice. As more tools become available (e.g., the Handsonic), my focuses will adapt accordingly to the musical needs I am serving.

The rest of the time I play acoustic kits, community band instuments, and a kazoo in the civic parade.

Actually, I considered that for schites and giggles all to mess with a certain "trendy - I play Les Paul / Marshall and golf only with Callaway Big Bertha's" guitarist... Needless to say my Muffins still proudly display the Spacemuffin logo...

That's true, I noticed some Roland pads in both their kits...

It's happened to me a few times, best time was when one band played me a song recorded with an 808, and demanded I tune my Premiers to sound like that. When I couldn't make my acoustics sound like an 808 I lost the job... their loss!

Is a keyboard player just a keyboard player or a synthesizer-ist?

Is a guitar player a guitar player or a Fender Stratocaster player?

                          Is a drummer a Vdrummer?

Don't think so. Vdrums is just an instrument, from a certain manufacturer. It's a tool. Just like Pearl, DW, Yamaha, Premier, Sonor, etc all make tools.

We're just drummers using electronic instruments. But that doesn't make us different drummers. Let stop to separate ourselves.

Amen brother! Let's define ourselves by what we do on our instrument, not by if we need a wall socket or not. After all, no matter what equipment we use, we still have to play them tubs, and we play them well!
