as far as questioning whether i can do it , i never claimed that i could , only questioned whether the people trashing tony could. but yes i do and can play a lot of technoish stuff (my interpretation).

and yes he does play live patterns that coincide with the music. as far as does he understand techno styles in general, its hard to say cause there are so many diverse styles. Its sort of everyman for himself , open to interpretation. His concept of drum and bass may be dated but then again he has been doing it for a long time and i think its more that he is able to play all the parts , not just the drums but the keyboards and samples etc without a sequencer or backing track. he triggers all the various elements of a complete track

jrcel -- is that the drumkat video? do you know where i can get a copy of that. ive heard it mentioned on the drumkat yahoo group
Tony's understanding of techno styles is 7-8 years old, i.e. completely and hopelessly outdated. Part of the idea behind all varieties of techno, be it Detroit House, Drum'n'Bass or Electronic Body Music, is to push back the boundaries and take the music in a different direction, not to remain static, and that's Tony's problem, he's been doing the same thing for years now, the same songs, the same patterns.
As for if I can do what he does, I've been doing it since about 1989, when I had my Simmons SDS9 and MTM hooked up with a D-50 and an S-900.

I didn't mean to give the impression that he's God's gift to edrumming, I just thought you'd like to see someone playing an edrum kit. There's a Berkley professor named Ed Uribe who did a performance of the Edukat Video that still blows me away every time I see it.

i have the vfx videos and he does a lot of playing to different loops and phrases as well as playing electronic drums live. i guess i dont understand why him playing over sampled loops and sequences is a point of contention as they are essential elements of a lot of electronic music. He makes it look extremely easy on the videos but i would like to see any of you naysayers sit down out your vdrums and churn that stuff out . it is harder than it looks !! just keeping track of all the different loops and sounds and changes. Plus he does some cool soloing over the loops . he definitly has chops, and as far as him jumping on the bandwagon, if you do the research (i.e go to his site and check out his bio) you will see he has been developing this concept for years. he actually worked with yamaha on the original dtx as well as the new dtxtreme.

I don't know, but it's a good question. He might not put on the CD and said "Yeah baby" but he might have regonized the inherent art of it.
