Interesting. It looks like Verderosa is doing a series of clinics across the country at Sam Ash stores (neither of the two Sam Ash locations near me have the DTXtreme set up yet, oddly enough). For Chicagoans, he's going to be at the Sam Ash in Lombard (DuPage County, northeast corner of Main and Roosevelt) on April 23. Call them to double check, I'm going by memory. I'll be there; it'll be interesting to hear his sound.

I don't like to bad mouth people but Tony Verderosa really sucks! There are so many great players around who don't get any press, I heard him at the PASIC Convention in Ohio and Tony is lame BUT he's LOUD - for many that equals GOOD.

He's not that good, really, his opinion of drum'n'bass is that it's the same as mid-80's fusion. Tony V left me pretty cold playing-wise. Zach Danzinger and JoJo Mayer both smoke him when it comes to jungle. I'm going to see him though, it's a free demonstration of the DTXtreme, which my local Sam Ash still hasn't set up yet (It's been in stock for a month already).

So much for not bad mouthing other professional drummers. As for me, I've watched the tape and am quite impressed with the live DJ concept. He's really controlling a wide variety of eclectic loops, chords, alt patterns and vocal snippets from the pads. Very impressive, as for teqnique, who knows, but he's definatly moving things forward. Igor Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" was booed the first time it was performed, so was Bach's first Toccata and Fugue so it's a familar story, isn't it?

Was Verderosa playing the drumíníbass (or any other techno style) loops only while playing on top of them? Lops are loops, but can he play the drumíníbass period without using drumíníbass loops.
Can he actually play live Ďelectronicaí type of music live without relying on loops at all?

            I doubt it.

Yes, he did some of that, {playing just with chords and phrases with no loops].

I got to see this for my self. Did he play full on drum'n'bass or just the chords and phrases?

                  I doubt it.

I've seen him a few times in NYC, and everytime I've seen him he's played mostly loops, chords and phrases, I never once saw him play full on drum'n'bass patterns without adding one or more loops to the picture. He kind of filled in the blanks between his loops.
This is based on the live performances of his that I've seen, and based on that I was extremly underwhelmed, especially after seeing JoJo Mayer with Nerve and Zach Danzinger's Bluth, two drummers who really play the patterns and don't just mix loops. But then again all the hype you hear about VFX is that he plays live drum'n'bass, and not a lot of people talk about the "drummer as DJ" concept he has, so I guess I went into his performances expecting something different, and was therefore disappointed.
I'm going to see him at the clinics anyway, hoping that he'll do something outside his normal performances. Who knows, maybe he'll make the DTXtremes sound good ;-)

Thanks for the info mcconaghy. I thought I had some competition out here.

The drummer as a DJ you say. Maybe he has the drummer DJ part down (I wander if the drumíníbass loops or sequences he was triggering were his own playing recordings?) and that is all to his live drumíníbass playing. NOW I REALLY HAVE TO HEAR THIS GUY !!!

Hey mcconaghy. If you going to catch this guyís clinic, could you please let me know at what BPM he is playing his version of drumíníbass?

Sound like this guy is jumping on the techno/electronica bandwagon. It takes more to play full on drumíníbass, like I said before Ė I doubt he can play it full on.

You're going to compare Tony Venderosa to Stravinsky? Wow, enough said - enjoy the clinic(?) Igor is turning over in his grave right now!

Content is, as we all know is subjective, what I am talking about is the ecclectic nature of Stravinsky's music and modern forms of electronica as first explored by John Cage and Professor Karlhienz Stockhausen. All these forms take from a variety of souces, in the case of Stravinsky, he took from atonal, various third world cultures, Euopean mainstream, and Russian Othadox folk music. Modern artist use an even wider range of influences to make a new kind of art. It took the public at large some time to become acustomed to music they were not familair with up to that point. That is what they have in common.

I wander if Stravinsky would have liked drumíníbass, if he were alive today?

I don't know, but it's a good question. He might not put on the CD and said "Yeah baby" but he might have regonized the inherent art of it.
