  • Arg Another Question!!

Ok, Once again.. hope you guys dont mind... I remember the salesman @ the store I went to test out the V's before told me that the PD120's used as floor toms when plugged into the Tom Slot's cannot use their Dual Trigger ability (because the inputs are single trigger). Is this true?

    Thanks.

    Lethic,

It is true. But Isuppose it doesn't really bother me. I wouldn't usually do a rim shot on a floor tom and the as far as putting, for example, another cymbal there is just too wierd and too much of an opportunity for crosstalk, between two instuments you'd not want it on.

Also, it's good that they included the dual pads anyway because that way you can rotate them around for which is the snare. Keeps everything more balanced and lightens the load of one pad getting beaten to hell.

BTW: They will take a pretty good playing level, but you wil need to adjust your technique anyway to get the most out of them. If you play really hard, you will prbably not see the dynamics and will feel that the td-10 has let you down dynamics-wise. Also, if you use the pd-7 and pd-9 pads for cymbals, you will need to adjust there as well or you won't be able to move your wrists in about 2 days' playing. Much more of a "pull-back" strike is necessary.

    Hope that helps.

The end result is the same with the PD-120, but the inputs actually are dual trigger. If you plug in a PD-7 or PD-9 into those same inputs you'll get dual trigger functionality.

There are many threads on this subject. It has to do with piezo x 2 vs piezo/fsr triggers. I sometimes do rimshots on my floor toms, of course, they are not intentional.

But you still can't assign two sounds.

Yes, you can. A PD7 or 9 in any input will give two separate sounds.

Sorry, Rob, you're wrong. Boingo is correct, in fact, all of the inputs are stereo (dual, whatever) and cgrieves is also correct. A dual (stereo, whatever) input will permit 2 unique voice assignments if PD7/9's are present. However, I still get confused as to why the PD120 (a dual-zone pad) won't permit the double assignment. I think feefer addressed the reason in another thread.

Boingo, are you getting rim-shot sounds from your floor-toms (PD-120's)?

I'll catch hell for this, but, I've heard a few peoples wonder why anyone would do rim-shots on the toms. Well, I did it alot in my gigging days. I was one of "them" that preferred minimal muffling, so when it came to a lot of our jazz/latin numbers, I could get a psuedo timbale effect from well-placed rim-shots on my toms.

You're right Marc, I've done the Pseudo-timbale thing as well, but that is part of the reason I got the vdrums. That type rim shot isn't necessary...just assign the timbale there.

No. It was just a reference to occasional sloppy playing and unintentionally hitting the rim.

On the TD-10, you can hear the sounds on the rim triggers by cursoring over to them with the rim trigger select and tapping the preview button. How's that for a somewhat useless piece of information.

That's like the rim sound on the kd-7, how point less is that?

                      Okay, perhaps I was wrong.

But (just for wanting to know) please repeat if I am correct now

You can assign two sounds with a pd 7/9
                      and not with a PD-120?

                        Affirmative.

The PD-7 & 9 are piezo/fsr. All 12 inputs are stereo/dual trigger when used with these pads.

The PD-120 is dual piezo. It only works as a stereo/dual trigger when used with the snare input (trigger #2).* The PD-120 functions as a single trigger when used with input 1 or 3 thru 12.

The PD-100 is a single trigger drum period.

*On the TD-10exp the snare is capable of 3 sounds: drum, rim and rim click when used with selective V-snare sounds.

I thank Feefer and others for finally drilling this into my head and believe I got this right.

OK Chris. Bear w/me. I thought we were talking about two different sounds at different times via striking the pad at different locations. I was under the impression your shack-thing permitted two different sounds being produced at different times via striking the pad at different velocity (?), or is it two different sounds being produced at the same time by striking the pad at a single location (2-sound layering)? Or none of the above? And that the s-thing was only for a TD-8's kick & AUX1/2 inputs only? I'm a little lost here folks, sorry.

Chris perhaps you could extract all of your wonderful s-thing posts and consolidate them all into one single post placed in the Tips & Tricks forum? T/Y all for your patience.
