  • Leaving well enough alone

I was wondering if the rest (any?) of you fall into this scenario? I tweak my kit and get it to E-drum nirvana, the response, sound, mix, etc. is "practically" perfect. But, then for some reason I find myself two minutes later making some kind of slight adjustment. Now... I love my kit and fortunately (or unfortunately) it sits still in my home studio untouched by anyone but myself and no matter how impressed my friends, bandmates or myself are with the sound, I still find myself constantly changing little things. Like... making the one crash cymbal 2db louder or tuning the ride up one pitch (you know real minor adjustments). So, am I alone here? Am I just a bit to anal? Or maybe its just due to fatigue or one less beer than the night befor (meaning my physical performance rather than its electrical performance). Again...I am very happy with my set having personally tried them all (brands) and I do understand the current limitations of E-drums but, I was just wondering as much fun it is and, sometimes annoying it is to keep pushing those little buttons, maybe I need to just leave well enough alone. Or do you think this is just part of the program?

Sounds like you are guilty of being human. Not to worry. We won't tell.

About two weeks ago, I had several perfect sets - balance, volumes, amb, effects... and the amp EQ was tweaked just right. I was a happy camper. Then I played the "what if" game, you know, where you start making little changes. I've been in a funk for two weeks trying to get it right again. I'm happy to say, as of 6 pm today, I reached nirvana. I resolved (once again) not to change any settings. Yeah, right!

The more appropriate question is, "who does not fall into this scenario?".

Yeah, I'm always like, "what if I just try that with a little more..."

          Drives me crazy.

One time I was in a rush, and I went to make a copy of a kit I liked, so I wouldn't mess up the original by over-tweaking, and I copied one of the lame presets right over the kit I liked. I almost lost my mind.

I had that with my old D4, but it seems much less with my ddrum4 kit. There's very few sounds on which I use equalisers on my mixer.

However, I have the Pearl P-2000 pedal with almost everything adjustable. I keep adjusting almost everyday. Think I just have to adjust it to play like a normal pedal and start getting used to playing bassdrum
            Music was my first love...

              Chuck,

I think the problem is we are listening to intensively to our e-drums. With acoustic kits there's not much to choose (only a wood type and a drumhead and when once purchased we don't tweak them) but with e-kits we are constantly tweaking or editing things. The more options and buttons, the more we change things. Perhaps because we're still looking for the 36 inch deep snare which Roland promised or the 1,000 steps dynamics from ddrum (which is only 999 steps in practice ).

Ya know what I mean? We are expecting too much from our kits.

So I would advice: leave the buttons alone for a while. Adjust your drum kit once and then simply play with it and have fun. An e-drum kit can't be affected that much by the room in which you play (acoustic drums are) so under normal circumstances there is no need at all to tweak over and over again. Just my two cents.

I think we all do this to some degree even with the parts we play. I think it has to do somewhat with complacency. I do wish to offer one piece of advice...make sure your tweaking is done in the context you intent to use it and don't tweak without hearing the kit from tape or through the PA your band uses. This is a common mistake many first time sound engineers make...tweaking the tracks to an absolute pristine quality one at a time only to frustrate themselves when the playback the entire mix the next day.

You'd be more normal if you spelled guess with a "G" instead of a "Q"

Think of what a pain it is to tune your acoustics. Look how easy it is to make adjustments to your electrics?
You can make them sound perfect all the time so why not. Adjust Away

Rus, your red dude is cool man !!

                              He always makes laugh.

I use about 5% of the overall features included on my V's. One Year I am going take a week vacation and lock myself in a room with my V's, my computers,
& drum machine and just have myself a tweek fest. Till then back to work.

P.S. Does anybody have the the same facination that I do with some of the songs/patterns in the TD-10 ? I find myself humming #2 "Groove Pop" all day long sometimes... maby just me.

                              Steve.
