  • TD-12 display not working until warm

    Hey all,
the display on my TD-12 has been getting progressively worse over several months. Now when I switch the module on, most of the display is faint or gone, as if the contrast is set incorrectly. I can adjust the contrast up and down fully but it makes no difference. It's pretty messed up. After a half an hour or more it gets a bit better, I assume it warms up. Then I can read most of it again. I've already dismantled the module and jiggled the LCD and made sure it is seated right, and that made no difference.
Just curious if anyone has heard of a similar problem and knows a fix?
My drumkit is in a side building and the temp goes down to about 10C (50f) some nights I guess. This doesn't seem excessive to me, and all the other LCD displays in the studio are working fine...

LCD's going bad. Contact Roland for info on getting it replaced. My 20 did this as well.

Will do. Did you just get a replacement screen?

No, I sent mine in. However, I'm not sure they still do them. They may point you to an authorized service center.

Mine does just the opposite. Sections of the screen go screwy after it warms up real good. Must be a planned obsolescence thing, I imagine all of them will start to fail right about now. I have had a couple of rack clamps just crack in half and drop a pad even when I was nowhere near the kit, it's the age of the plastic. I notice they use metal clamps on the new kits because they figured out the plastic will fail without notice.

I think someone responded here that Roland had mentioned receiving a batch of bad LCDs that they were aware of going bad after a period of time. This affected the 12 and 20, IIRC. I don't recall the specifics, but I remember it a handful of years ago.
