  • Marketshare report

Sharing a post from the digitalDrummer Facebook group:
This is not a definitive marketshare analysis, but Musical Merchandise Review has just published a survey of over 400 music dealers, asking about electronic percussion. Among the questions, they were asked about their biggest sellers. Here are the results:
    Roland: 60%
    Yamaha: 56%
    KAT Percussion: 12%
    Zildjian: 12%
    Pearl: 9%
    Behringer: 8%
    Alesis: 4%
    ddrum: 4%
    Pintech: 4%
    2Box: 4%
    Korg: 2%
    NFUZD: 2%
    Akai: 1%
No surprises among the top two, but the rest of the list is interesting. And it's interesting to see NFUZD on the list, considering it has only been on sale for a couple of months.
You can find the full survey report here:

I'm no math nor statistical genius, but ain't that list a bit over 100% if you add all the numbers?

I think they asked dealers what brands accounted for what proportion of their sales and then averaged that out.

It looks like the questionnaire allowed for multiple answers, which they related to the number of responding dealers (most likely). So the sum ain't 100 % ; -)

        Example:
        • 100 dealers received the questionnaire
        • 50 answered
        • Brand1: 50 tickmarks, 50 / 50 = 100 %
        • Brand2: 10 tickmarks, 10 / 50 = 20 %
        • etc.

I agree, this procedure should have been explained in the review and not left to speculations for the reader.

Definitely not definitive. It kind of means nothing if you think about it. A majority of it depends on what is floor planned by the specific vendor, the vendor's pricing structure, and many many other factors. For instance, Kraft primarily sells Roland gear. Their answers to such an inquiry would obviously be far different than Bob's drum shop that specializes in acoustics, but sells some small amounts of electronics. The best true view of the market would come from reported sales by the manufacturers themselves. That, I'd be interested in seeing.

I thought it was interesting, for what it was worth. Sorry to have wasted anyone's time with non-statistically significant data.

The comments are worth the report though, if you extrapolate a bit.

I've concluded that our "hobbyist" influence is insignificant... but we knew that already.

My comment wasn't meant with that perspective. If anything, I was griping that manufacturers won't share the data.

Yeah, thanks Allan for sharing, but I've stopped caring about numbers in ads or politicians' campaigns a long time ago.

I flipped when I saw 100% Real Juice in bold letters on a package. The small print was that it actually contained 5% juice, and 95% water and sugar, but the 5% worth of juice was 100% real.....

I can't believe that things like that are legal.
