  • Advice regarding upgrade options

I'm looking at possible upgrades for my TD-6V e-kit (VEX'd with Collective kit), I recently got a CY-5 to replace the PD-6 I was using for a hi-hat and moved the PD-6 to be a fifth tom (using the PCS-31L cables to split the outputs of Tom-2 and Tom-3). I'm very happy with the CY-5 and it's great having 5 toms, but I'm looking at other options for upgrading my kit. Any advice would be great on the following (I don't have the $ to do all of them, maybe could do one in the near future)...

    1) Replace the 5 remaining PD-6s with PD-85s
    2) Replace the TD-6V with a TD-12 module
    3) Replace the KD-7 kick trigger with a KD-9 and get a double bass kick pedal (looking at either the DW-3000 or DW-5000 double lefty pedal, I have the DW-5000 single now)

I would like to do all of them, and also if I upgraded to the TD-12 module, I know I would want to upgrade the hi-hat to a VH-11 or VH-12, but that's a lot more $.

I also want an Octapad SPD-30, but that's me just being greedy, lol.

Thanks for any advice in advance,
    Jim

Don't forget the DIY option of using acoustic heads with mesh heads and internal triggers...way cheaper than a whole set of even used PD85s.

      Kenster,
Wondering if you could explain what you mean by using acoustic heads w mesh heads and internal triggers instead of buying PD85's (which I have on my kit) can you explain in more detail the significance of doing that? Are you referring to converting to acoustic drums, or making your own trigger pads? thanks!

Advice we've been giving for years still applies here: start off by buying the most module you can afford. In your case that means getting the TD-12. Play with it once or twice and you'll never look at the TD-6 again.

Thanks for the advice, I guess the TD-12 must be much better than the TD-11, as I played on one at Guitar Center and it really didn't sound much better to me than the TD-6, or maybe I'm just not noticing the difference. I have to find one to play on, as that location only had a TD-11 setup on the floor, older and lower level kits.

I'm not really interested in the DIY thing, would rather just buy Roland pads if I were to upgrade the pads, but it is interesting that people have figured out how to do all of that stuff.

There's another new guy in the Foyer that just put his TD12 on eBay!! Might wanna check it out!

As for the DIY...go get a really cheap inexpensive acoustic kit with the right 10 and 12 inch tom sizes....slice the toms in half if you want twice as many drums, order some mesh heads and either build or buy some cakepan triggers or internal or external ones (there are lots to choose from) and voila!! You have a low priced high quality high performing e kit!!! Acoustic kit shells also mount very nicely to racks as well as stands!

If you didn't notice the difference, than the TD-12 won't sound better than your TD-6. It's really all about other things, like interval control (cymbal swells), additional sounds, sequencing, ability to edit sounds, etc.

It depends what your looking to do mate.

I have a TD6V which I use just to jam along to stuff. 99% of the kits were total cr-p. I just took the Natural Kit and modified all the triggers till I had something I liked and that it does all I want.

OK so I spent probably 3 years frigging around with it But you will do that with a TD25 and more probably cause there are more options to change.

I think back to my `A` days. You saw a kit, you tried the kit, you bought the kit, you tuned the drums, and you played them on stage. That was it.

Pick up an off brand A kit for under $100, install triggers and heads for $40 (each drum) and you can play full sized drums.

@NewTricks, what brand of crossbar triggers are you using?
