  • How many of you.....

Count in your head as you play??

    Sometimes?

    All the time??

    Never??

    Only on tricky odd times??

Funny you mention this. I usually do not count when playing...I'm able to get the find and match the beat without it. However, I recently made a post about Tom Petty's "You Got Lucky" here:
    http://vdrums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40560
I was playing it again last night and it was SO easy, as long as I count a few measures to get the groove.
    When in doubt, COUNT!

I count for tricky passages and triplet feels. Sometimes. Especially when learning a piece. Live, I only count when sight reading. Whic is not all that oftern, thank goodness.

Never really, unless I'm counting patterns in crazy odd-time stuff like DT instrumentals... but I usually sing the pattern rather than actually count.

          I never count. I'm a drummer... I don't know how.

The only time I would count (or lightly click sticks) is for other band members. Some of them would have problems when there were long pauses and we had to come back in together. Some people just have a natural urge to rush it so they focus on it and make it worse.

When drumming or playing any other instrument I only count if there's a short pause in my playing while another instrument is soloing or something like that.

I count the beats until the return of my own playing. That's real important 'cause it allows the solo player or players to improvise but still makes sure I return when I'm supposed to.

I come form a background in playing with big bands, jazz ensembles and concert bands so counting is natural to me but I only do it if I feel the need. Most of the time I just feel the groove and go with that.

Never, except for learning a tricky bit.

I only count subdivisions when learning tricky parts. I never count when grooving, except when I'm teaching.

just when resting... the rest of the time I groove with it.

                          Feel the beat?

I tend to feel the beat and not count, unfortunately so far i can only feel it in one big toe so i may need further training

I need to use a metronome more as my timing is lousy, not good for a drummer

I love this mode of thinking. This works really well for me, it helps me to "feel" the pattern rather than keeping count of it, which really only serves to confuse the hell out of me. Like other ppl here I really only count when there is a break..

I'm more of a grunter myself, I guess you could say I sing the pattern rather than count it...
