This was a revelation for me, but then again I'm not always the sharpest knife in the drawer. Which is a good lesson - don't keep your sharpest knife in your drawers. 
Anyways,
To use the rod - unlock the locknut, push the rod down, yes down, and then tighten the lock nut. Do not press down on the footboard!
This is the opposite of a real high-hat adjustment, where you undo the locknut, press down on the footboard, and then relock the nut.
By using the above technique, you can come close to having the sloshy, part-open high-hat sound as the "default" sound ,ie, when your foot is off the pedal.
