  • Addictive Drums--need help!

I'm trying to set up Addictive Drums as a stand-alone for triggering drums sounds from my TD-11. I have installed AD and set up/installed a midi cable from the midi out on the module to my laptop. Now, the question is...how do I set up AD to trigger sounds when I hit individual pads on my TD-11? So far, I can hear the AD when I click drums with the mouse, but can't get my pads to trigger these sounds. (I can turn off the TD-11 sounds in the midi control on the module).
Roland TD-11: PD-105 snare, PDX-100 toms (3); CY-13R ride; CY-12 crash (2); KD-9 kick; Iron Cobra HP900 kick pedal; VH-10 hi-hat; Iron Cobra HH605 hi-hat stand; Simmons DA200s monitor; Sony MDR-7520 and Audioquest Nightowl headphones; AD2; VEX Apex, Sync, Icons, Boost, Masters 1-2; Drum-Tec LA Studios, Real Acoustic, Alternate Rock Sound Editions

Have you selected the TD-11 as your interface inside AD...?

Sorry to hear that Gradier. Good News/Bad News – I had the same problem a while back. I never did get it to work in “standalone” but was able to get it to run under a host (Reaper). I had it running under SaviHost (which is much simpler albeit less powerful) but then it also stopped responding from there. I spoke (email) to both XLN and Roland – neither of them were of any help.

I then installed AD on a different machine (older laptop but more powerful). All is working fine now. So I just left it on that machine and called it a day. I never did figure out what caused this.

One thing I noticed in AD was when I looked at the Audio MIDI Setup, it would show the TD-11 as an Active MIDI Input but it was not checked. When I went to check it to “activate” it, nothing happened. This is what I emailed XLN about. They never resolved my issue, in fact they just stopped responding to my emails (left a little bitter taste in my mouth). I see you also posted on XLN’s forum - I hope you have better luck than I did.

Wishing you well and keep up posted. If you find an answer I’d most certainly be interested as who knows when/if this will happen again.

Funny thing is, hairmetal-81, the TD-11 is not listed on the pull down list for Roland kits inside AD.

Also, I don't really know if it is a problem with AD and TD-11, or whether I don't actually know HOW to make AD trigger drum sounds yet (I think the latter is true for sure). I have to get AD to recognize the TD-11, right? Do I drag and drop, or what?

ok, after lots of fiddling, I have got the sounds coming through. Turned off "local control" in MIDI (in the 'systems' section) of the TD-11 module, so now I only get AD sounds. Seems to be some latency, but I downloaded ASIO4all, and that may help. Also, AD seems to respond to identifying my TD-11 kit as "TD-20" for some reason.

I don't know from memory which kits are specifically listed in AD, but most TD-modules adhere to GM-standards anyways. So one TD from the list might be just as good a selection as the next... who knows!?

              :-)

Are you using a Mac or PC? I have a similar issue on my Mac, but it works if I go in to my audio/midi setup and change my audio buffer size. Doesn't matter what I change it to, just requires a switch every time I turn on AD. Usually I switch between 96 and 128 samples. I'm using a TD6V

I'm using a PC running Vista. I guess it takes some experimenting with audio buffer size. Or, do I need an audio interface?

First things first, reformat your computer to Windows 7 or 8.1. - They are leaner OS's and generally better for lower latency, regardless of your hardware.

Speaking of which, if you notice a clear delay between hitting a pad and hearing AD, then you need to lower the ASIO buffer size; 256, 128, 64, 32. When you get pops and cracks, or if your PC just crashes, you need to raise the buffer. If you can't get latency to an acceptable level then you will need to buy a new sound card, external USB/Firewire or internal PCIe card.

Just as a friendly 'heads-up', you have read through our VST-Primer sticky, right?

Thanks, hairmetal-81, I am going to do just that.
