Yes, the employee statement leaves little room for doubt! Hopefully, they'll reword the media release.

I agree with Allan's comment. When I read that I concluded that Alesis must have a license from Roland to sell in the US, otherwise they're infringing on the patent, just like others had experienced. As a Pintech drum owner, all their heads say "Under license from Roland Corp". Hart, from what I gather was infringing, but fought it out with Roland and argued they had "prior art", meaning they were using the technology prior to Roland's patent filing date. Others have had to take a different tact: sell the pads with non-mesh heads and offer the heads as a separate product. Roland's patent is on the device as a whole: drum, sensor and head in combination. It remains interesting to see if Alesis will sell the combination product in the US and Japan. If not, no license.

Hmmm... I doubt that Alesis will get away with this.

If the patent was indeed on the entire device - the combination of drum sensor and mesh head, not just the mesh by its own - wouldn't that mean a rim-trigger-based systems could ship their product equipped with mesh just as well...?

But alas, 2box distributes their kits in the US with rubber-heads, so go figure...

By the way: Could someone please fix the typo in the thread-title? ...slightly annoying...

      Hi,
I fully agree. I don't think that they were planning to get away with anything. I meant that if they plan to sell in the US, they obtained a license. If they don't plan to sell in the US, it's because they didn't obtain one. That would be the only reason not to sell in the US.

On your other point, yes, someone, please fix my typo. Sorry about that.

On second thought placement of the controls at the bottom without the original slope in the prototype was not a good idea. They're too vulnerable to stick strikes there! Design fail. Such an obvious thing.
