I recently purchased a used Roland TD-3 drum kit for my son for Xmas. It has 4 toms and 2 cymbals the kick pedal/bass and hi hat controller. But it does not have the hi hat cymbal. Everything seems to be working fine except that there is no cymbal to match with the FD 8 pedal. But since there was a 4th tom I tried to use it as the hi hat. The tom pad seems to work well except that the FD 8 pedal does not seem to be working at all in conjunction with it. I checked the connector and it seems fine. I returned it to the shop from which I bought it and they claim it is working fine but that it MUST be used in conjunction with the hi hat cymbal... is this true? Shouldn't the pedal at least make a sound even by itself by triggering the hi hat clap when pressed quickly? What can be used with the FD 8?

The Pedal pressed on its own will make a 'chick' noise or a 'splash' noise.
Older versions of the TD-3 do not come with a hi-hat cymbal - that '4th tom' you have is actually the hi-hat. See this pic here: http://www.roland.co.uk/assets/image..._front_gal.jpg for reference - lots of the kits used to use the same pad as a hi-hat cymbal as for the toms (and snare in a lot of cases).
So yeah - if you have it all hooked up correctly, one of your pads (pd8 i think they are) should be in the 'HI-HAT' port and the FD-8 needs to be in the 'HH CTRL'.
With that setup you should get hihat cymbal noises from the pad - and they should change from open to closed as you press on the FD-8.
If the sounds dont change when you step on the controller, it sounds like the FD-8 is dodgy.--

Thanks! I figured any dual trigger device should work and should not be ned for the chick sound... I swapped pedals with another used set... and reset my brain (and the drums brain)... now every thing works except for the chick sound which works intermittently (and mostly when you stomp the pedal crazy hard)... not good.... hmmm I have read about spraying the inside of the pedal with silicone lube... I will give that a try...Comment

Yeah, the fd-8 pedal requires a little "special attention" occasionally - there is a whole thread about it here on the en forum.--
