Fsr triggers, better with age?

I thought I once readon this forum that Fsr triggers become more sensitive over time is this true. I've noticed that my vride bell trigger seems to have be come more sensitive. When I first got the cymbal I had problems with soft hits from the tip of stick. Now I find myself being able to get good bell triggering without having to hammer it.

Interlink designed FSR sensors to be used as mouse pointers for laptop computers as they are responsive to touch, they've since been adapted for hanheld devices and such as well as touchscreens. In 1987 Simmons adapted FSR to use in their mallet controllers and the Portakit, then in 1988 Kat came out with the Drumkat as well as the Malletkat which also uses FSR. They weren't desined to be struck with drumsticks so they do breakdown with time. They are good for approximately 10 million activations {according to Interlink literature} then they fail and need to be replaced. I've owned my Drumkat since 1995 and so far I haven't had to replace matrix sheet, but I do expect to have a failure soon. For my unit replacement with installation runs $155 plus shipping to and from Alternate Mode. I think they are field replacable for individual pads but I'm not sure of this.

I had/have a trapkat which is all FSR as well. That thing was great but had to be repaired every 6 months from trigger faliure. I finally wanted to fix the thing myself (foolish!). I took it apart and all of the pads are linked to one huge matrix sheet. I decided to gut the thing and attach piezeos to it. Much cheaper that way but I lost all of the MIDI capabilities.

Kat had alot of hardware and software problems with the Trapkat initially that led to the downfall of the company. You can send your unit to Alternate Mode for a complete overhaul, they'll fix anything that's wrong with your machne http://www.alternatemode.com/
