I've tried midiox, and sysex95.. Although I can see the toming clocks and raw data dumps, I can't capture sysex data.. When I look at the status monitor in midiox, different channels light up, but the "SX" which I'm guessing is sysex never does. I've tried bulk dumps and single kits as well.. Any advice?

Have you set the MIDI OUT and IN on your computer to Roland MPU-401?
Did you press the right button at the Roland Vdrums (Bulk dump all). With the Forge SysEx Manager 97 it's all very easy. In the left screen you will see some data. That's it.Robert -
Yeah, except I don't have a "roland mpu-401
" just the default installed MPU-401 driver.
The Bulk dump percent completed bar on the td-8 starts chugging but nothing happens on the computer side, even though like I said before I see a bunch of random data on the data stream monitor in midi-ox.
I have also tried using cakewalk to play music through the td-8, and that seems to work fine.. (for some reason the record button is grayed out, just coincidence?)
Is there a sysex97? I'll try and find that, right now I have sysex95.. But I doubt it will do anything since midi-ox doesn't work either. I was thinking maybe I need to map all the channels to "Sysex" in Midiox? Or would that just get messed up dumps?

Yeah, I don't think there is much difference between the SysEx 95 and 97 except for some library parts, but that's not what you're looking for.
I would advice to see mister Windows again. Does the SysEx program recognize any MIDI ports? Most programs have a device section for this. If not: then go to the settings screen in your Microsoft Windows and choose 'multi-media' or 'sound devices' (I don't know the english terms for this. I have a dutch windows version, ofcourse). And check out if the MPU401 MIDI port is configured correct. Perhaps it uses the same IRQ number as the sound card or printer. Then Windows shows an yellow spot with " ! " in it. Try different settings. Each device needs its own IRQ. With some sound cards the MIDI port is not automatically installed. Only the sound part. With those sound cards the MIDI port comes with the Joystick section (same connector on your pc). In this case: install the joystick.RobertComment

I'd suggest trying sysex97 first. Here's the site to download sysex97 - it'll take about two minutes. http://www.leafdigital.com/Software/

If you still have problems, a place to try is the PC's control panel. You may need to change a midi setting. Let's not get into that unless it's a problem.
Drivers are a possibility. I recently established a personal rule based on several bad experiences. Don't update drivers or software unless there is a need to do so - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.Comment

Well, no luck yet, here's a screenshot:
the 'SX' port never lights up, but the others flash, like port 9 is in the pic, and of course the data comes up in the monitor window. Nothing in the Sysex window, and "Pass sysex" is on.
I tried both Sysex95 and 97, no response in either one.

I can upload sysex data, I just uploaded into the td-8 successfully.
