  • New TD 8 user needing some basic help

Hi , I just purchased a Roland studio set, TD8 with 3 PD9s, 4 PD7s, & 3 CY6s for cymbals. I do not know much about programming. The cymbals seem to be too quite
Even with the faders up. Can any one help me with a starting point on how & what values to set all the pads & cymbals to be about the same. I am referring to the sensitivity, threshold, decay & velocity curve. Right now I am only working on kit 64 to try to learn the system before trying to modify any of the other kits. The default settings do not seem to be balanced from hh, toms, snare & cymbals. Any help would be appreciated, as I am a new to the system. And can these settings be set globally or do you have to do it on each kit. Scratch the last question, I should only try one thing at a time! Thanks in advance for your feedback. Freemont.

Why don't you try reading the manual first?

Greetings, first of all the TD-8's group faders section has a button to swicth between kick/cymbals, snare/other etc.when the led is up it adjust's the kick (which is default) when it is down it adjusts the cymbals and so on across the board. this is mainly a group or overall control. For individual control you need to push the "mixer" button. Then hit the pad you wish to adjust. You can adjust the rim/head volumes of those pads with dual function. You can also adjust the pan of each pad. I would suggest starting this with all your fader settings set to about 50%. This will give you head room and cut so you can make changes on the fly. I should ad that the group fader's effect ALL kits, while the mixing section is PER kit. As far as the other adjustments go it's a matter of taste. Trial and error. Start with the mixer settings and if you have a specific problem repost and we'll help you through it. hope this helps, Chuck

        Freemont,
Good luck with your new kit. Chuck's advice was perfect.
The more you explore the TD 8, the easier it will be to adjust and understand.
I think the TD 8 is super...

Thanks for the help. I did read the manual. But I should clarify, I am not a drummer or a tech head, the drum set was a Christmas gift for my son. He had been playing an acoustic set for a couple of years. He is fairly young so expecting him to understand the manual and all the tech info is kind of hard. So I thought I would call on the expertise of all the experienced V-drummers in the forum. I want to be as knowledgeable as possible to make it easier for me to relate to my son in a way we can both understand all the abilities of the set. Again thanks for the help. Freemont.

Wow! Not too many dads will get this involved when their kid says he wants to be a drummer.

(Warning: Trip down memory lane approaching ...)

I was fortunate. After 3 years of whining about playing the drums, my dad figured it wasn't a passing fancy and made a deal with me. He would spring for a set if I agreed to take lessons. His friend booked dance bands for the local VFW and knew a professional drummer. Dad would take me once a week for lessons ($5.00/hr back in 1966 - rather expensive), 70 miles round trip. It was the best thing that ever happened to me and 33 yrs later I am still grateful.

Hats off to you for this kind of interest.

I'm sure one of the TD-8 owners will come up with some tips on individual pad and group settings. I have a TD-10 and don't want to add confusion.
Kit Pic 1 Kit Pic 2 Kit Pic 3... And FOR SALE I have: 3 PD-9's, MDS-10 purple rack w/cables/pad and cym mounts. See classified posts for details or PM me.

                Chuck,
I am having the same problem and I understand
what you are saying about the headroom. But
if I set the mixer half way, the volume will
be way too low.I have the mixer maxed out
and the volume on the kit is still too low.
And I have the group faders all the way up.
Is there a way to set the master volume other
than using the master volume on the OUTSIDE
of the module? Is there any internal setting?
And Stoovey-lighten up,were all friends here.

I'm not sure about the TD-8, but in the TD-10 you can go to "percussion group", I believe, and bump up the "drums" volume a bit.

Some headphones are inefficient which can explain low volumes, but if you can't get good volume when going out to a P.A. system, something else is wrong.

Check other kits out, and look to see if the whole kit is going to effects or compressor and the effects a/or compressor sends and returns are adjusted well.

That's the whole point of being an old timer.

                      You can say things like

                      RTFM!!!

                      and

USE THE MOST XLNT SEARCH ENGINE

                      and

                      THE PM-3 SUCKS!

All because you ARE an old timer and you have seen the questions posted time and time again!
Of course, I fully believe that if people want to reply to the question they are entitled to do so.
If no one could be bothered addressing a simple question then it will remain unanswered, and the old timers have seen plenty of those too!!

Stooves, my above post was tongue-in-cheek!
You can say whatever you like! F*ck the old timers, scr*w the newbies, flame anyone who gives an opinion! This is an open forum, if you want to mouth off for any reason you are quite entitled to do it. You just won't make many friends that way.
I admit that we sometimes get a little rabid in here, but you may notice that not EVERY old timer (in fact very few) reply to every newbies question with RTFM.
