  • master outs vs direct outs

This question has probably been posted several times already, but being a new Vdrum user I needed to clarify this.

On the TD-10 Manual it says the direct outs does not transmit digital effects and only the ambiance.

What about the compressor and the EQ settings? Are those incorporated in the sound coming out of the direct outs?

I guess I'll try to clarify my own question.

I know there has been many discussions on this issue, but none had the fundamental points clarified. The TD-10 has Compressor / Ambience / Effects / EQ. Which ones are come out in the directs?

I'm not trying to be a wise guy or anything, but couldn't you just plug in and try it to find out? Either you will hear a difference or you won't. You can't hurt it.

Kit Pic 1 Kit Pic 2 Kit Pic 3... And FOR SALE I have: 3 PD-9's, MDS-10 purple rack w/cables/pad and cym mounts. See classified posts for details or PM me.

Since no one else has posted yet, I'll try to help. I'm not 100 percent sure but I'm going from experience in using the ambience and effects and splitting them into the direct outs. I think the ambience controls all the effects, that being said, you can control the output of those effects by changing the ambience control from master to the direct outs. I have set up the ambience to go thru the direct outs and can have no sound coming thru the master out. I hope that answers your question.

Now that I am home to verify it, and my PC seems to be connecting again, let me add...
Short answer: the EQ and compression are usable with direct outs (DO's).

Other tidbids of info: The Master EQ and the Master Volume do not work with DO's. The volume sliders do work with DO's. If you are using the DO's and Master Out, turn off the global effects or turn off the effects for each pad not on the Master Out (MO) because the MO will play the effects for all drums regardless where you route them and it sounds like crap. To control the ambience for the direct outs, use the ambience group settings. Each DO has a separate control.

I once asked similar questions on this and Lee Overstreet pointed out there is a minor problem with the ambience controls and bleed. Check out what he had to say in this thread. http://www.vdrums.com/discussion/For...ML/001098.html He also addressed this topic in some detail 1 to 1.5 yrs ago. You can try searching bleed, ambience and Lee for that. Schuh Man also addresses the bleed.

I got nostalgic and looked a little further. Here are some old posts on the topic... http://www.vdrums.com/discussion/For...ML/000284.html http://www.vdrums.com/discussion/For...ML/000114.html

Thanks Boingo. That was very helpful. I'm trying to record the drums on the VS 1880 and needed the clarification.
