  • Midi problems

I have a question concerning my midi problem . Maybe it is a foolish question but i could not find it in the search area .
My first question is if it is possible to assign each trigger input to a separate Midi channel . There only seems to be the option to assign " All Drums " to only one midi channel , but i intend to record my drumming splitting each trigger to a separate channel to Cubase in order to work with all trigger inputs separate .
The other problem is that i assigned each trigger of the first drum kit to a special midi note , but the problem is that if i change to the next drum kit i have to do the same procedure again for this drum kit . Is it possible to copy the midi setting of a drum kit and paste it to another drum kit or even better to assign the midi setting to all kits .

Thanx a happy new year and greetings from Germany .

    1. drums must be on channel 10
    2. note mappings are standard for drums http://www.joelsampson.com/five/fivemap.html
    3. you want notes on separate tracks, not channels, I know you can seperate notes into different tracks with cakewalk and logic audio. not sure about cubase
    4. what brain are you using? most modules set the note for the input not the kit. That's how my td-6 works

You can split notes in cubase using the logical editor.

I think you would be better changing kit 1 back to the default midi notes and getting used to this rather than changing all the midi notes for all the other kits.

Have you tried using the drum editor in cubase?
This allows you to set up your own drum map and gives a different line for each drum.
So you can see all the notes together unlke the key editor.

Another thing you should be aware of is the way the TD10 handles positional sensing via midi.
A Control change message is sent just before the Note On message which tells the module where you hit the pad.
Because all the relevant pads use the same Control Change number you cant extract the right CC`s for the right pads.
It can be done manually but its a pain in the A***.
Same goes for the hi hat with the CC4 pedal messages.

Ive got a TD10 cubase drum map that I can mail to you but i`d suggest you make your own as its the best way to get your head round how it works.

OK , e-drummer i guess you are absolutely right , it is a pain in the A.... to change the midi settings of all drum kits . I just changed my original setting . The other thing is , Animal , I thought i heard of the possibility to assign each trigger input to one midi channel not track . If i am not mistaken the DD-50 from Yamaha has that option . My intention is for example to assign the snare to midi channel 1 , bass drum midi channel 2 and so on and on (not the whole drum on midi channel 10 ) in order to process each midi channel to separate waves , so that I can work with them one by one . I do not want to have a single wave for the complete drum .
        By the way , I forgot to mention that I just bought a TD10 with a TDW1 .
        Thanx for fast answers

No Roland module currently can do this ,it's why I don't own one.
Drumkat Turbo 4.5, Emulator X3, Superior 2.1, Roland Fantom XR, DTXtreme III, SPD-20 etc.......

Personally I leave the drums as midi until the final mixdown as this allows you to edit the module right up until all the other tracks and the mix is complete.
I you want the drum track recorded as separate waves because you want to apply VST effects or eq to the waves then this is no problem.
If you have a sound card with multiple inputs then you can assign sound to the direct outs and record the drums across different audio tracks (you do get some spill but thats another current thread).

The other way to do it if your soundcard only has one input is to play the midi track several times ,using the TD10 group faders to mute the sounds so that you can record one track at a time.
With cubase you can use the punch in/out record functins to record certain tracks just when needed ,for example the toms may only get played once in every verse ,in a fill so it seems pointless to record the whole verse for this track when only one bar is needed. The other bonus is you will save lots of disk space.

Feefer is correct in that the midi channel can be changed ,but its not a per pad option which I think is what Aktarus wanted.

Thats right , it is not exactly what i wanted . I know that you can change the midi channel for all ( four ) parts but what I intended to do was to assign to each pad a different midi channel .
But I guess the idea of e-drummer is quite good to wait until the mix-down and then split the sound by using multiple audio ins of the sound card .
But i am quite nervous about the spill e-drummer mentioned , is that a common problem of all users ? Can I avoid this ?
                Thanx and Greetings

Ok , i found the topic concerning the spill . It is actually annoying but by first recording everything to midi and then if necessary record each trigger one by one should avoid the problem i guess .
As Metallica would call it "Its said but true" .
