Output Hiss

Hi, My name is Neal. I have some questions about the V-drums purple. I am the drummer for our church here in DesMoines. We just bought them. Im an accoustic player, but am very impressed with this set. I do have some questions (tons actually) but Ill start with just a few. The first is a hiss problem we are having. Like I said we just got them so forgive if I ask the totally obvious. I am sending the sound boys three direct feeds. Bass on 1, snare on two and toms and symbols on three. I am assuming that the output of these drums are line level. The cable drop for these is about 250 feet. By the time it gets to thier board they are recieving the signal at a low mic level. That doesnt seem right to me. When the gain to compensate, it adds quite a bit of noise in to the main mix. Any ideas or suggestions for sending a cleaner signal to the sound guys. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think what you need is a direct box (or two) to balance your signal (this will require a TRS or XLR cable). The outputs of your module are unbalanced and thus your signal will collect interference over long runs.

No doubt about it. For that kind of run, you will need direct boxes, balance the lines, etc.

Same thing here. I use the kit hooked up the same way...three channels...three direct boxes to the snake...to the board.

The td-10 doesn't have the "quietest" outputs in the world, so expect some hiss, especially on a channel you need to boost treble on, like cymbals.

Ditto!

I never understand while Roland gives us unbalanced outputs on the TD's. I balanced the signals with DI's (direct boxes). It works fine, but as redbrick says there still will be some hiss.

They had to cut costs in order to provide the award-winning effects.

If you happen to be using the Roland KC-500 amps for monitoring you can come out of the XLR connectors on the amp. This also provides a balanced output (I run through 100' snake to the main board this way).

Good tip JMergard! And welcome to this Forum.

Also a lot of other amplifier builders build in XLR direct outputs next to the speaker outs.

Hmmmm, Direct Boxes, BBE, Unbalanced outputs? I've no idea what the first 2 do & why we need them & I assume the TD10 has unbalanced volume levels when using its direct outputs? Sorry to be an ignorant dumbasc on this ****e. I'd appreciate a bonehead 101 on DBs & BBEs if anyone has a minute?

Also, are my TD8's 2 pairs of Outputs balanced? Or will I too have to worry about all this technical gunk later on?
