  • Windows XP

Well, it's here, like it or not, but I can't decide whether that's a good or bad thing.....

I just ordered a new computer that's shipping with XP preloaded (my choice)--my logic being that if XP turns out to be a bust initially then I'll just go back to my previous OS (Windows '98). One of the things that made me decide to do this was that Microsoft was pushing the idea that XP was going to be a big improvement for specific applications, digital audio being one of them.

That being the case, I figured I'd lurk in some recording software forums to see what the buzz was from people that were already using XP. My own recording software is Cakewalk 9.03, Vegas Audio/Video, Cool Edit Pro 1.2, and Logic Audio Platinum 4.7, but so far the only substantial feedback I've been getting is from Syntrillium's Cool Edit Pro forum, where the like it/launch it ratio seems to be running about 50/50. Not encouraging news...

Are any of you guys having any luck with Windows XP in the digital recording realm? I'd sure appreciate your thoughts and opinions. And as much as I hate to sound dense about this, would someone please be so kind as to steer me in the direction of any good user forums for Cake, Vegas, and Logic? I haven't had much luck so far searching for them myself. Also, if anyone knows where to download any new XP-related software upgrades for any of these recording packages, that would be much appreciated as well.

Thanks, fellas. Waiting to hear your thoughts.......

300!! That'll be a whiskey sour with an extra cherry, please....

Hey! Is it true that only 1 PC can install each new copy of Win XP? No sharing, my bro. tells me?!

When I bought Win98SE in 98', I was at least able to let a bro. & 2 friends do an install with my CD key.

      My understanding is this:

All your hardware must have driver support for XP or else don't even bother..ESPECIALLY..your sound hardware..(your computer soundcard)

Every year you pay a "license Fee" of $100 for the use of XP on your PC....

Alexander, that's what I also heard about the sharing restriction. Supposedly, each PC using XP is uniquely registered by way of the software--"signature software", if you will, that's locked in to your computer and your computer only.

captain54, I REALLY hope to God that you're wrong about that $100.00 license fee! Microsoft can **** the hell right off if they think they're getting that money from me! I realize that Bill Gates is the Forbes poster boy and that he doesn't give a **** one way or the other, but that kind of notion, if true, spells PR disaster for Microsoft once the word gets out. You would think they would be a little smarter than this in light of their recent legal troubles. I can see potential competitors licking their chops now: "Hey, use our OS. We don't charge anything extra for it." I work for Bank Of America, and this smacks of the same sort of greed that allows smaller banks to attract customers away from us ("Free checking!"). If what you're saying is true, this has "bad" written all over it....

I also heard that XP requires you to re-register with Microsoft with all hardware and some software additions to your PC. Granted, the Internet is hardly a bastion of privacy as it is, but if I want to install my Mitsubishi Electronics "Virtual Asian Babes" plug-in on my computer , that's my business, not Bill Gates's. Has Big Brother just opened up a brand-new location in the Pacific Northwest? Sure looks that way.

I think Microsoft should just ask me to stamp "666" on my forehead or one of my hands and get it over with.

If, again, all this maledicta flying around is true.......

"Every year you pay a "license Fee" of $100 for the use of XP on your PC...." ?????

When you install the xp, you have to register online.
When you want to install it on a new computer, you will have to call Ms-support to get a new SN for the new hardware.

          Thats all.

          Enjoy.

Are you sure? Are you using XP, Roya? I hope you're right. $100/yr. is a mutherphucking ripoff! Will you be allowed unlimited Serial Numbers, or a fixed Amount?

I am just in the process of putting together a computer based addition to my studio. Many of the pro shops that configure DAW computers (even those where it is there exclusive line of business) have steered me away from XP. None of them have had enough time to sort through everything to make a recommendation over using '98 (see Boris' remarks on the AudioComputing site, etc.) I have heard from several sources that some popular software and hardware don't have drivers for it yet. That is not to say they won't come, or that it might not eventually be as good or better than '98 for digital audio, but XP is just in that new unknown pocket at the moment. I ran into specific lack of drivers for some of the software and hardware I will be running, and with the other unknowns, I bagged the idea entirely. Let us know your results though.

BTW, there is an unofficial Logic users group that is very good. If I run across the name later I'll post it for you.

2000 requires substantial tweaking to optimize it for audio and much of the needed drivers (again if available) are beta, (or not available). Writing for it is pretty slow from what I hear, because it is going to be replaced by the various versions of XP. Microsoft has a lot of eggs in the XP basket. '98 is the Windows standard for audio right now. Most everything supports it. XP appears to be the future. Do your homework if you want it now. You might incorporate it brilliantly, but you may need to overcome some challenges. I would definitely think twice about considering 2000 though.

As far as my previous post, I'm doing more research on the topic of annual licensing...

I've heard it from more than one source, that's why I brought it up..

That being said, I wouldn't put it past Microsoft, one year down the road, to have your OS shut down until you cough up the $100..

I know this is primarily a Windows world. But it seems the best audio computer these days is still a Mac. Stable OS, no freaking $100 licensing fee every year, etc.

I've been using Win98SE for 3? years now. My brother has Win2000 & I've been wondering if I should upgrade to it?

What do y'all fellows think, Yea or Nay?
